Liberals hate Holidays

Bruce Vento Elementary School, in St. Paul, has decided to stop celebrating Valentine’s Day along with other “dominant holidays” including These include Christmas, Thanksgiving, Halloween, and Valentine’s Day.

White People Bad.

Christians Bad.

Bruce Vento Elementary is roughly 63% Asian American, 24% African American, 10% Hispanic American and 4% Caucasian American.

So in this case the Liberals are for the Majority (Majority Rules!) and they want to discriminate against the Minority! 🙂

“My personal feeling is we need to find a way to honor and engage in holidays that are inclusive of our student population,” Principal Scott Masini wrote in a letter to parents.

Yeah, AMERICAN HOLIDAYS in AMERICA for AMERICANS is racist and non-inclusive! 🙂

Masini, who has served as the principal since 2013, was concerned that the celebrations may be ‘encroaching on the educational opportunities of others and threatening the culture of tolerance and respect for all’. 

Except the minorities at his school that is. 🙂

The Star-Tribune reports the letter was surfaced on a private Facebook page titled, “Supporting St. Paul Students and Teachers.”

“I have come to the difficult decision to discontinue the celebration of the dominant holidays until we can come to a better understanding of how the dominant view will suppress someone else’s view,” the principal noted.

The Star-Tribune reports Masini made the decision to can the holidays in consultation with his staff.

“One of the concerns that I have,” he wrote, “…is whether or not this practice is encroaching on the educational opportunities of others and threatening the culture of tolerance and respect for all.”

In support, one commenter said she believes Masini and his staff are “being sensitive to children at their school who do not practice these holidays due to religious beliefs. … Holidays are very personal. Every family has a different take on how they celebrate or do not celebrate them.”

The school district in Malden, Mass., the second most diverse school system in that state, dumped Valentine’s Day three years ago, opting to observe “Friendship Day” instead. That’s something that won’t cost you a dime.

Well, it is so Hetero and capitalistic, it must be evil.

The holiday hullabaloo has generated plenty of outrage across the Twin Cities. Get a load of some of the local headlines:

Even the folks at Minnesota Public Radio got riled up – and they’re not exactly a bastion of conservative thought.

“A St. Paul school is putting a stake in the very heart of Valentine’s Day,” Bob Collins wrote. 

The principal told me via email that it was “truly not a story” – and then referred me to the district for further clarification.

Saint Paul Public Schools released a statement to the Star-Tribune that certainly seemed to defend the principal’s ban on heart-shaped candies.

“Because Saint Paul Public Schools is a diverse district that is filled with families from around the world we strive to respect all cultures and all students,” they wrote. “We recognize that not every student celebrates or participates in some or all holidays. We have a board policy that discourages programs and festivities that celebrate observances unless they are required by law.”

It sounds to me like the St. Paul area is infected with a case of ethnic sensitivity – a diagnosis confirmed by the district spokesperson.

Aka White People and White People things are bad!

She explained to me that their schools include many, many cultures – students from around the world – including a very large Somali population.

That’s all well and good, but the children live in America now. They are presumably Americans. As such they and their families should be acclimating to the American way of life.

They no longer live in Somalia. They live in the United States. And in the United States we celebrate St. Valentine’s Day and Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Of course, there could be another reason behind the holiday ban.

Perhaps no one wanted to be Principal Masini’s Valentine. Or maybe Santa Claus left a lump of coal in his Christmas stocking? Or maybe, just maybe, he got the short end of the wishbone? (Todd Starnes and UK Daily Mail)

Be Glad You’re Not a Liberal

Is calling today “Black Friday” racist? 🙂

Reason #47,321 to be glad you’re not a liberal: You get to enjoy your holiday and allow those around you to enjoy theirs. Not so for our left-wing counterparts, who mostly disdain Thanksgiving – along with Columbus Day, Independence Day, Flag Day, Christmas, Easter, etc. – freighting it with their liberal guilt and contempt for any one or thing that doesn’t reflect their enlightened world-view.

So while you’re eagerly tucking into your turkey and happily plopping potatoes on your plate, spare a thought for those fated to suffer through Thanksgiving though they know that what the Pilgrims wrought is nothing to celebrate.

Pass the bio degradable tissues and prepare to have your consciousness raised (yes, it’s as painful as it sounds). Here are five reasons liberals hate Thanksgiving, and want you to hate it too.

1. Liberals hate Thanksgiving because it is racist. Yes that’s right, Thanksgiving is all about that white supremacy! “It is reserved by history and the intent of ‘the founders’ as the supremely white American holiday, the most ghoulish event on the national calendar.” One glass of white privilege to wash down the white meat please!

2. Liberals hate Thanksgiving because it is sexist. Sure, you can guess that because we often think of women slaving away in the kitchen while the men watch football. But here’s a little food for thought: according to liberal feminists, Thanksgiving is sexist because there just aren’t enough lady balloons in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade!

3. Liberals hate Thanksgiving because it’s killing the environment. Climate change is the last thing anyone wants to hear on Thanksgiving. Let that conversation burn in the oven with the forgotten dinner rolls.

4. Liberals hate Thanksgiving because it’s anti animal rights. Liberals want you to “carry that weight” of guilt and shame knowing your perfectly moist and seasoned turkey suffered and was murdered on its journey to your dinner table. Instead liberals want you to take a hard stance on animal rights and opt for a nice slice of raw broccoli loaf.

5. Liberals hate Thanksgiving because it’s a holiday for celebrating genocide. Thanksgiving, aka “Europeans’ genocidal campaign against indigenous people to acquire the land base of the United States.” Above all else, Thanksgiving is a time to channel your inner sociopath, according to liberals. Without those Europeans invading an unknown land and conquering all those Native Americans you wouldn’t have a reason to carve a turkey!

I personally had friends over that don’t have any family to celebrate with so we celebrate together and we had a good meal,a good time and I did a lot of the cooking.

Its Says Liberal, Liberal, Liberal on The Label, Label, Label

Obamacare’s menu labeling regulation promises to be a disaster for the food and restaurant industries, as its implementation is both costly and extremely onerous. While its deleterious effects on the pizza, restaurant, and grocery industries have been most well known, it also has the potential to shutter an industry near and dear to Americans’ hearts: craft beer.

Since beer has a few too many calories for bureaucrats, the health law dictates that all brewers include a detailed calorie count on every type of beer produced. Failure to do so, according to Americans for Tax Reform, “means craft brewers will not be able to sell their beer in any restaurant chain with over 20 locations.”

The Cato Institute estimates the Obamacare calorie labeling requirements will cost a business as much as $77,000 to implement. For larger beer companies, this is a drop in the bucket, but for small, local craft brewers it represents a substantial cost that they must pay. As a result, it creates a significant disadvantage compared to larger beer companies who can better absorb the cost of this new regulation.

 According to Bart Watson, chief economist of the Brewers Association, “Most of the new [craft beer] entrants continue to be small and local, operating in neighborhoods or towns. What it means to be a brewery is shifting, back toward an era when breweries were largely local, and operated as a neighborhood bar or restaurant.” The increasingly small size of craft breweries means they are faced with a tough decision in light of the impending regulations: cut costs and possibly lay off workers to pay for the calorie labels, or be shut out of one of the most profitable markets for their product. Either way, it is a lose – lose situation for the craft beer brewers and drinkers, an industry that grew 27.8 percent from 2013 to 2014 when it was left alone.

Which is why the government has to f*ck it up.

Food and Drug Administration announced its final rule for menu labeling, a regulation that’s already proving to be a nightmare for the major chain restaurants and retail food establishments that must comply by Dec. 1, 2015, or face a stiff penalty.

And the scorn of the self-righteous Left.

“It got much worse in the final rule,” Lynn Liddle, chairperson of the American Pizza Community and executive VP of communications and investor relations for Domino’s Pizza, told Townhall. “I was surprised, disappointed, and befuddled because there’s all this new stuff in there where I go, ‘I don’t know how we’re gonna do this.’ … We’re gonna need a lot more time to untangle this mess, which I don’t think is viable or workable.”

While the regulation is bad for all industries, pizza has been hit particularly hard. For one, it’s a food industry unlike any other—90 percent of customers get their food delivered, making the idea of in-store displays of calorie information unnecessary and costly, not to mention extremely difficult since it’s such a customizable food.

Liddle said a concession was made on labeling by the slice rather than the whole pizza, but the rule is still disastrous for small businesses across America.

“[W]hat [FDA] did in these final rules is they expanded their definition of a menu and said ‘we’re gonna look at it and say anything a consumer will think of at that moment as a menu,’ so it’s very squishy right now because nobody really understands this thing because they’re saying if you have a picture or a name of a product, along with a price, were gonna call that a menu, so if you take it to the ridiculous that could include television advertising, because in the restaurant industry you always have a picture of product and a price, that’s how the restaurant industry advertises,” she explained.

“We went to [the FDA] with a proposed solution; we didn’t say ‘we want to get out of it,’ we said, ‘we have a better way’ … and that better way was primarily doing this electronically, which by the way we already do voluntarily, so it was a really workable solution … and basically they’ve ignored it,” she said.

Not on the Agenda. They are the Government so not only are they right, but they can’t have the peons making their own rules! Where is the power in that. Where is the job satisfaction.

The most ridiculous part about the entire regulation is that menu labeling has little to no effect on consumers’ purchasing choices, and studies demonstrating that menu labeling is linked to a reduction in obesity rates, the supposed benefit the FDA used to justify the regulation in the first place, doesn’t exist.  (Townhall)

The True History of Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is an evil, exploitative holiday and it should be banned for its cruelty to the turkey and to human beings and here are 5 reasons why:

a) It’s Racist! What other reason do you need to shut down this abomination, after all,the Europeans came to these shores and exploited the native population.

We give thanks for being the invader, the exploiter, the dominator, the greedy, the gluttonous, the colonizer, the thief, indeed the genocidaire, rather than on the other side of imperialism’s zero-sum murderous game. b) It promotes Obesity. is there any day of the year more gluttonous than Thanksgiving. It’s full on and sheer promotion and celebration of over-eating should be stopped.

And the capital slave drivers make their employees work on Thanksgiving too! How greedy are these people and how much are you programmed by them to spend money you probably don’t have on new shiny bobbles dangled in front of you as a “great deal”.

Not only has this country been stolen from first nations under fists of genocide for hundreds of years through violence and colonial oppression, but the holiday alleging to commemorate the pilgrims’ gratitude to Native Americans has cast away even that illusion for the sake of gluttony, blind consumerism, and capitalism. Turkey Day

I am still thankful I am alive. I have friends and family. I have a job, a roof over my head and food on the table.

I am thankful that, for now at least, I am still free.

I am Thankful for the simple things.

Especially, the ones Liberals have not taken yet.

Economist Paul Krugman wants America to return to the more “moral” tax policies of the 1950s when it “made the rich pay their fair share.” But JFK would take issue with his morals.

In a recent New York Times column, Krugman pines for the days when “the top bracket faced a marginal tax rate of 91, that’s right 91%.”

He calls taking 90 cents of every additional dollar an individual earns at that level “economic justice.”

President Kennedy called it stupid.

He and his economic advisers argued it was stifling business investment. So they slashed the top rate to 70%, ignoring the left’s class warfare arguments.

They understood that a rising tide lifts all boats. Sure enough, Kennedy’s tax cuts spurred economic activity, which in turn created new jobs, expanded the tax base and almost wiped out a $7 billion federal budget deficit.

The results were so impressive, they planned to chop the top rate even lower.

“Because tax revenue would continue to rise with an expanding economy, they argued that it would be possible and even necessary for the government again and again to cut tax rates,” said New York University economist Richard Sylla, co-author of “The Evolution of the American Economy.”

Unfortunately, President Johnson reversed course, hiking rates to fund his disastrous War on Poverty. It would take President Reagan to pick up where Kennedy left off.

Krugman argues today’s lower rate of 35% has somehow created an idle class with “armies of servants and yachts.”

“Today,” he protests, “any hint of policies that might crimp plutocrats’ style is met with cries of ‘socialism.'”

As a matter of fact, that’s what we used to call penalizing success in this country.

In 1960, Barry Goldwater kicked hard against the socialist assumption that government has an unlimited claim on the wealth of the people, and that the only relevant question was what share of its claim politicians should exercise.

“A man’s earnings are his property as much as his land and the house in which he lives,” the Arizona senator argued.

Goldwater asserted it was “immoral” to deny man this basic economic freedom.

“How can he be free if the fruits of his labor are not his to dispose of, but are treated instead as part of a common pool of public wealth?” he demanded in “The Conscience of a Conservative.” “Property and freedom are inseparable: To the extent government takes the one in the form of taxes, it intrudes on the other.”

Goldwater believed the only “fair share” is one flat rate for every taxpayer, working class or wealthy, and no more.

“The idea that a man who makes $100,000 a year should be forced to contribute 90% of his income to the cost of government while the man who makes $10,000 is made to pay 20% is repugnant to my notions of justice,” he said. “I do not believe in punishing success.”

Did you hear that, Gov. Jindal?

Goldwater said the real aim of hyperprogressive taxation is “to redistribute the nation’s wealth.”

Such “an objective does violence both to the charter of the republic and the laws of nature,” he said. “We are all equal in the eyes of God but we are equal in no other respect. Artificial devices for enforcing equality among unequal men must be rejected if we would restore that charter and honor those laws.”

Are you listening, Speaker Boehner?

There is nothing “patriotic” about paying more in taxes just to finance President Obama’s new entitlements. If he gets a 39.6% rate, he’ll just as soon take 91%.

And he and his redistributionists won’t stop with “millionaires and billionaires.” Or those making $250,000.

Once they’re sufficiently soaked, they’ll come after the middle class until we’re all stagnating in the same “swampland of collectivism,” as Goldwater so presciently warned. (IBD)

Thanksgiving 2011

I am just thankful to be alive.

After yesterday’s car accident that totaled my car what else is there to say.

The false accusations of  “sexual harrasment” at Fry’s Electronics an hour earlier is another story for another day.

What a day!! 😦

So I turn it over to one of my favorite writer, Thomas Sowell.

“Alice in Wonderland” was written by a professor who also wrote a book on symbolic logic. So it is not surprising that Alice encountered not only strange behavior in Wonderland, but also strange and illogical reasoning — of a sort too often found in the real world, and which a logician would be very much aware of.

If Alice could visit the world of liberal rhetoric and assumptions today, she might find similarly illogical and bizarre thinking. But people suffering in the current economy might not find it nearly as entertaining as “Alice in Wonderland.”

Perhaps the most remarkable feature of the world envisioned by today’s liberals is that it is a world where other people just passively accept whatever “change” liberals impose. In the world of Liberal Land, you can just take for granted all the benefits of the existing society, and then simply tack on your new, wonderful ideas that will make things better.

For example, if the economy is going along well and you happen to take a notion that there ought to be more home ownership, especially among the poor and minorities, then you simply have the government decree that lenders have to lend to more low-income people and minorities who want mortgages, ending finicky mortgage standards about down payments, income and credit histories.

That sounds like a fine idea in the world of Liberal Land. Unfortunately, in the ugly world of reality, it turned out to be a financial disaster, from which the economy has still not yet recovered. Nor have the poor and minorities.

Apparently you cannot just tack on your pet notions to whatever already exists, without repercussions spreading throughout the whole economy. That’s what happens in the ugly world of reality, as distinguished from the beautiful world of Liberal Land.

The strange and bizarre characters found in “Alice in Wonderland” have counterparts in the political vision of Liberal Land today. Among the most interesting of these characters are those elites who are convinced that they are so much smarter than the rest of us that they feel both a right and a duty to take all sorts of decisions out of our incompetent hands — for our own good.

In San Francisco, which is Liberal Land personified, there have been attempts to ban the circumcision of newborn baby boys. Fortunately, that was nipped in the bud. But it shows how widely the self-anointed saviors of Liberal Land feel entitled to take decisions out of the hands of mere ordinary citizens.

Secretary of the Treasury Timothy Geithner says, “We’re facing a very consequential debate about some fundamental choices as a country.” People talk that way in Liberal Land. Moreover, such statements pass muster with those who simply take in the words, decide whether they sound nice to them, and then move on.

But, if you take words seriously, the more fundamental question is whether individuals are to remain free to make their own choices, as distinguished from having collectivized choices, “as a country” — which is to say, having choices made by government officials and imposed on the rest of us.

The history of the 20th century is a painful lesson on what happens when collective choices replace individual choices. Even leaving aside the chilling history of totalitarianism in the 20th century, the history of economic central planning shows it to have been such a widely recognized disaster that even communist and socialist governments were abandoning it as the century ended.

Making choices “as a country” cannot be avoided in some cases, such as elections or referenda. But that is very different from saying that decisions in general should be made “as a country” — which boils down to having people like Timothy Geithner taking more and more decisions out of our own hands and imposing their will on the rest of us. That way lies madness exceeding anything done by the Mad Hatter in “Alice in Wonderland.”

That way lie unfunded mandates, nanny state interventions in people’s lives, such as banning circumcision — and the ultimate nanny state monstrosity, ObamaCare.

The world of reality has its problems, so it is understandable that some people want to escape to a different world, where you can talk lofty talk and forget about ugly realities like costs and repercussions. The world of reality is not nearly as lovely as the world of Liberal Land. No wonder so many people want to go there.

Happy Thanksgiving!

John Stossel: Had today’s political class been in power in 1623, tomorrow’s holiday would have been called “Starvation Day” instead of Thanksgiving. Of course, most of us wouldn’t be alive to celebrate it.

Every year around this time, schoolchildren are taught about that wonderful day when Pilgrims and Native Americans shared the fruits of the harvest. But the first Thanksgiving in 1623 almost didn’t happen.

Long before the failure of modern socialism, the earliest European settlers gave us a dramatic demonstration of the fatal flaws of collectivism. Unfortunately, few Americans today know it.

The Pilgrims at Plymouth Colony organized their farm economy along communal lines. The goal was to share the work and produce equally.

That’s why they nearly all starved.

When people can get the same return with less effort, most people make less effort. Plymouth settlers faked illness rather than working the common property. Some even stole, despite their Puritan convictions. Total production was too meager to support the population, and famine resulted. This went on for two years.

“So as it well appeared that famine must still ensue the next year also, if not some way prevented,” wrote Gov. William Bradford in his diary. The colonists, he said, “began to think how they might raise as much corn as they could, and obtain a better crop than they had done, that they might not still thus languish in misery. At length after much debate of things, (I) (with the advice of the chiefest among them) gave way that they should set corn every man for his own particular, and in that regard trust to themselves. And so assigned to every family a parcel of land.”

In other words, the people of Plymouth moved from socialism to private farming. The results were dramatic.

“This had very good success,” Bradford wrote, “for it made all hands very industrious, so as much more corn was planted than otherwise would have been. By this time harvest was come, and instead of famine, now God gave them plenty, and the face of things was changed, to the rejoicing of the hearts of many.”

Because of the change, the first Thanksgiving could be held in November 1623.

What Plymouth suffered under communalism was what economists today call the tragedy of the commons. The problem has been known since ancient Greece. As Aristotle noted, “That which is common to the greatest number has the least care bestowed upon it.”

If individuals can take from a common pot regardless of how much they put in it, each person has an incentive to be a free-rider, to do as little as possible and take as much as possible because what one fails to take will be taken by someone else. Soon, the pot is empty.

What private property does — as the Pilgrims discovered — is connect effort to reward, creating an incentive for people to produce far more. Then, if there’s a free market, people will trade their surpluses to others for the things they lack. Mutual exchange for mutual benefit makes the community richer.

Here’s the biggest irony of all: The U.S. government has yet to apply the lesson to its first conquest: Native Americans. The U.S. government has held most Indian land in trust since the 19th century. This discourages initiative and risk-taking because, among other reasons, it can’t be used as collateral for loans. On Indian reservations, “private land is 40 to 90 percent more productive than land owned through the Bureau of Indian Affairs,” says economist Terry Anderson, executive director of PERC. “If you drive through western reservations, you will see on one side cultivated fields, irrigation, and on the other side, overgrazed pasture, run-down pastures and homes. One is a simple commons; the other side is private property. You have Indians on both sides. The important thing is someone owns one side.”

Secure property rights are the key. When producers know their future products are safe from confiscation, they take risks and invest. But when they fear they will be deprived of the fruits of their labor, they will do as little as possible.

That’s the lost lesson of Thanksgiving.

Personal Responsibility Government Style

You’re a wreck.

You can’t do things right.

Common sense has been leeched out of you.

You’re too stupid for your own good.

Or at least the government thinks so. So in your best interest they want to act for you.

You’re too Fat, so we have the Food Police wanting to ban Salt, fat, and in San Francisco- Happy Meals. And it doesn’t stop there. Oh no, it does not.

Consider this press release:

As a dietitian, I suggest that parents make Halloween candy rules to avoid sugar highs and stomach aches. But even more important, I encourage all Americans to support comprehensive child nutrition reform to improve the National School Lunch Program and other child nutrition programs. Congress will soon consider legislation to reauthorize the school lunch program, and this vote comes not a moment too soon.

Nearly 40 percent of calories consumed by children are from junk food, according to a new study analyzing data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Half of these calories come from just six foods: pizza, ice cream, whole milk, cookies and cake, soda, and sugary fruit drinks.

Wait—milk? Milk is a “junk food”?

Oh, and the group behind this release, the “Physicians Committee” for “Responsible Medicine” (PCRM) is neither a physicians group, nor responsible, nor interested in medicine. (They do seem to be a committee.) So while PCRM claims to be a group of good-hearted doctors concerned about nutrition, it’s actually an animal rights front group whose M.O. is to scare everyone toward vegetarianism.

Love the Orwellian name, by the way.

It’s head is the former head of PeTA. And you should know by now how insane those people are.

PCRM founder Neal Barnard has called cheese “dairy crack…the purest form of the [milk] drug.” PCRM has also tried to sue milk companies in Washington, DC, demanding (are you sitting down?) “monetary awards for the pain and suffering” that lactose intolerant Americans have experienced from consuming milk.

Of course, the truth is that milk—whole or otherwise—is a great source of Vitamin A, Vitamin D, and calcium. No serious medical group would suggest otherwise, unless they were more concerned with “saving” cows than promoting human health. Come to think of it, that’s probably PCRM’s real beef in the first place.

New York City Passes the Salt with Another Ad Campaign

And of course, these people just have your Personal Responsibility at heart. 🙂

New York City is also spearheading the National Salt Reduction Initiative (NSRI), a partnership with state health authorities and other national and local health organizations. The group’s goal is “a voluntary reduction of sodium levels with the objective of reducing the amount of salt in packaged and restaurant foods by 25 percent over five years.”

There’s just one problem: Very few food companies have signed on with the NSRI. So how can the reduction stay voluntary? (Hint: It won’t.)

Then there’s the FDA which announced earlier this year that they intended to reduce Americans’ salt intake — without providing any specific details at the time. Notorious food nags at the Center for Science in the Public Interest have been petitioning the FDA for years to revoke salt’s “generally recognized as safe” (GRAS) status. This would require the FDA to approve the (much lower) salt content of every food in the nation. (consumerfreedom.com)

They know better. And if you won’t take “personal responsibility” and do as they say then they’ll just have to force you to do it. 🙂

The Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood may be experiencing some repetitive whiplash.

Responding to a couple articles written in The Daily Caller, LaHood took to his blog in order to clarify his position about whether or not he “believed we should employ a specific technology that would block cell phone signals in cars to prevent drivers from talking or texting behind the wheel.”

“I think the technology is there and I think you’re going to see the technology become adaptable in automobiles to disable these cell phones,” LaHood had said on MSNBC. “We need to do a lot more if were going to save lives.”

In his blog post on Thursday, the Secretary clarified his statements with another quote taken from his MSNBC appearance:

“There’s a lot of technology out there now that can disable phones and we’re looking at that. A number of [cell technology innovators] came to our Distracted Driving Summit here in Washington and presented their technology, and that’s one way. But you have to have good laws, you have to have good enforcement, and you have to have people take personal responsibility. That’s the bottom line.” [Highlighted for enjoyment]

“The boom line,” LaHood repeated after the excerpt, was “personal responsibility.”

“For starters, there will never be a technological device that imparts common sense when it comes to safe driving,” he said. LaHood later added that “No one should need a piece of technology in their car to tell them that talking or texting while driving is incredibly dangerous.”

Sometimes, however, folks do need a little help developing “personal responsibility,” which is why LaHood reminded those reading his blog that:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is currently conducting broad distracted driving research so that we can expand what we know about the problem and look for ways to solve it. As part of that research, NHTSA is also evaluating some kinds of technologies that might one day prove helpful, such as collision avoidance and lane departure warning systems. But we also recognize the limitations of technology.

When Lahood said in the blog post that distracted driving was something the DOT would “tackle on all fronts,” he means on the technological front, too.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s “Driver Distraction Plan” sent to TheDC by the DOT specifically mentions the “emerging technical option in managing distractions.” This option specifically includes software that could be “downloaded to a cell phone, [and] has thresholds past which calls are not sent through to the driver but instead sent to voicemail; text messages are also blocked.”

After conducting a survey of the technology, the DOT said “this information can then be used to assess the overall feasibility of these as a countermeasure for distracted driving,” according to the plan. Currently, the NHTSA is “in the planning stages of this project” with a final report expected next year.

Neither the DOT nor the NHTSA responded to requests made by TheDC for further details on this “emerging technical option.”

On Monday, the Department of Transportation launched its awareness week campaign, “The Faces of Distracted Driving Week.” However, it’s not clear whether the campaign was originally intended to include LaHood himself.

And if they can manage that, what’s next? Hmmm…
