College Exploration of Learning?

Victor Davis Hanson:What do campus microaggressions, safe spaces, trigger warnings, speech codes and censorship have to do with higher learning?

American universities want it both ways. They expect unquestioned subsidized support from the public, but also to operate in a way impossible for anyone else.

Colleges still wear the ancient clothes of higher learning. Latin mottos, caps and gowns, ivy-covered spires and high talk of liberal education reflect a hallowed intellectual tradition.

In fact, today’s campuses mimic ideological boot camps. Tenured professors seek to indoctrinate young people in certain preconceived progressive political agendas. Environmental studies classes are not very open to debating the “settled science” of man-caused, carbon-induced global warming — or the need for immediate and massive government intervention to address it. Grade-conscious and indebted students make the necessary ideological adjustments.

It’s their way or the highway. It’s not like Liberals are tolerant of people disagreeing with them. 🙂 Diversity is Progressive. 🙂

Few sociological courses celebrate the uniquely American assimilationist melting pot. Race, class and gender agenda courses — along with thousands of “studies” courses — have been invented. A generation of politicized professors has made the strange argument that they alone have discovered all sorts of critical new disciplines of knowledge — apparently unknown for 2,500 years — to ensure that graduates would be better educated than ever before.

Universities have lost their commitment to the inductive method. Preconceived anti-Enlightenment theories are established as settled fact and part of career promotion. Evidence is made to fit these unquestioned assumptions.

A former student government leader at American University is disdainful of a student group’s decision to host Karl Rove, arguing that conservative views are anathema to the school.

“AU is a very liberal-leaning community,” William McNamara writes in an op-ed for The Rival, a student publication unaffiliated with the university. “Which begs the important question many are asking which is, why is KPU bringing a speaker that the majority of the campus doesn’t care for?”

“I am fucking sick of my student activity fee going to individuals, ideologies, and organizations that neither I, nor a majority of student organizations support,” said SIS student and notable KPU malcontent Bill Kakenmaster. “Karl Rove may well be sought after, but to call him a political ‘brain’ is to discredit valid political intellectualism.”

A professor from Temple University, the professor said sex markers are “poor proxies” because “maleness and femaleness” are characteristics we share with many other people.

“heterosexist in assumption” and something which seemed “like a relic from another time…nonsensical,” saying it “has been discontinued, thankfully.”

He cited the labeling of mother and father as “harmful” because these parents don’t “self-identify” that way and “some transgender men can bear children.”

While the talk had approximately 50 student, faculty, and Charlottesville residents in attendance, some students came to the event to fulfill a requirement imposed by the University of Virginia’s Intro to Gender and Sexuality class. Campus Reform also spotted an attendance sheet, on which six students of the Anthropology department’s Language and Gender course had written their names. (Campus Reform)

Two unfortunate results have predictably followed.

Students now leave campus largely prepped by their professors to embrace a predictable menu: the glories of larger government, income redistribution, greater entitlements, radical environmentalism, abortion, multiculturalism, suspicion of traditional religion, and antipathy to the international role of the United States in the past and present.

Unfortunately, this costly indoctrination comes at the expense of what is increasingly less taught: traditional mastery of foreign languages, great works of literature, philosophy, history, mastery of grammar and composition, and the Socratic method.

Careerism often drives campus politics. If poor, minority or first-generation college students could obtain the traditional tools of success — English and mathematic literacy, acquaintance with American history and protocols, oral and written language mastery — they would succeed as individuals without need for the college industry of collective victimology that assumes a permanent lack of parity.

Employers and the adult world no longer equate a bachelor’s degree with proof of a well-rounded education. Yet chastised universities usually oppose any objective measurement of their effectiveness. They certainly want federally insured student loans, but they do not want proof of their competency through national exit tests, which might help ensure that all graduates leave college able to compute, read and write well. How odd that standardized tests are permissible to judge entering students but not to certify exiting ones.

Colleges are schizophrenic in lots of other ways. They claim they are special institutions that should be free to form their own curricula, enjoy ancient rites such as faculty tenure, not worry much how much they charge students or treat part-time faculty, and establish radical new legal protocols that run contrary to the Constitution.

When colleges create “safe spaces” designated by race and gender, they butt up against U.S. law. Assuming the guilt rather than innocence of students accused of bad behavior does not stand up in court.

Most Americans who work in a mall or shop are not awarded lifelong guaranteed employment. Nor are our newspapers censored with “trigger warnings” in fear that readers might become hurt by depressing news stories.

Universities ask the public to subsidize these strange rituals by making endowments tax-exempt. The government extends federally guaranteed loans and ensures write-offs for charitable giving.

In the past, there was a clear bargain. The university said, “Leave us alone to do our business that we know best, and we promise to turn out the best-educated and most inductive generation of American youth.”

Universities are now breaking their word. Students, if they even graduate (about four in 10 do not, even after six years), are not “universally” educated. Instead, they are the least prepared yet most politicized graduates in memory. Arrogance and ignorance are a bad combination.

But make excellent Democrats. 🙂

If the university cannot fulfill its original compact of broadly educating youth while keeping within bounds of American laws and protocols, then it will either have to change or slowly become irrelevant.

The market is already sensing a void — and thus opportunity. Online degree programs proliferate. Private vocational and trade schools sprout up around college campuses. Even Ivy League degrees have become mostly empty brand names, like Gucci or Versace, that convey status and open doors but hardly guarantee that graduates are knowledgeable or inductive thinkers.

All of these growing alternatives to borrowing a collective $1 trillion for university education reflect that it may not only be a bad deal, but a rigged one as well.

Free Speech

“Freedom is the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.”– George Orwell

Trigger warning: This column will include discussion of ideas that may conflict with your own and some might find “offensive”. 🙂

There is one area where suppression of free speech has blossomed. That is at our universities and colleges. It started ages ago. In 1993, it exploded into the consciousness of America when Eden Jacobowitz, a student at the University of Pennsylvania, disturbed by noise outside his dorm room yelled out his window “Shut up, you water buffalo.” The case challenged the right of free speech against a campus harassment code.

These speech codes created by the professors and left-wing administrators (mainly former professors) were being used to control two principal groups. First and foremost, fellow scholars seeking to become colleagues that had to run the gauntlet of becoming tenured. Second, students who wished to express contrary views in a classroom or in a paper. To a point those wielding these policies succeeded on campuses, but they created their own uncontrollable monstrosity.

The students started their own efforts to suppress freedom of speech. It became overtly public whenever a speaker deemed inappropriate in their positions was invited to a college campus. People like Ann Coulter or David Horowitz were being harassed off campuses. If they were allowed to speak they would be heckled instead of respectfully listened to or ignored. An opposing opinion became repugnant. The expression of open thought that universities for which were formed had become the suppressor. The guardians of free speech had been thrashed.

It then spread to college commencement speeches. People like former Secretary of State Condi Rice were run out of addresses. The professors and their minions would not allow an unapproved thought to pierce their ears. Only properly-vetted speakers who spoke “the gospel” were allowed.

Next it spread to comedians. You know — those people who have the job in our society to make fun of our worst tendencies. They make sure that we do not take ourselves too seriously. Not at colleges. Jerry Seinfeld, possibly the leading stand-up comedian of his generation, abandoned performing on college campuses because of the obliteration of free speech. When it went public he made clear he was not the only one when he said “I hear that all the time, ‘I don’t play colleges,’ but I hear a lot of people tell me, ‘Don’t go near colleges. They’re so PC.” Chris Rock deserted the circuit and so has Larry the Cable Guy. The students don’t want to be offended.

The narrowest, most repressive minds are the closed minded Liberals who preach “diversity” and “tolerance”. Orwell could not better.

The students are now demanding what they call “triggers” (warnings about upcoming material) from their professors. The American Association of University Professors stated in a committee report, “A current threat to academic freedom in the classroom comes from a demand that teachers provide warnings in advance if assigned material contains anything that might trigger difficult emotional responses for students. This follows from earlier calls not to offend students’ sensibilities by introducing material that challenges their values and beliefs.” The professors are now experiencing the wrath of their creation.

The term “Microagression” was coined by Harvard Professor Chester M. Pierce in 1970 to describe insults and dismissals he said he had regularly witnessed non-black Americans inflict on Blacks. It has now been expanded to include any perceived insult against anyone who feels they have been insulted. As you know the largest university system in the United States (University of California) issued guidelines for professors to help them from hurting the feelings of their students. It was stated by the UC administration that they are just guidelines, but no one believes that and speech is once again suppressed as the students stomp out academic freedom in the name of protecting their little hearts from being hurt.

LGBTQI Departments at Universities,a whole vast bureaucracy dedicated to the prevention of “offense” in the name of “tolerance” and “diversity”.

Orwell could never have done better. The Doublespeak is breathtaking.

It used to be that the universities were the center of free thought. Scholars were the center of that going back to Socrates. Colleges were the center of the defense of free speech and resistance. If it was a revolt, it started with the students. The U.S. anti-war movement on college campuses in the 1960s was the center of the free speech movement. So were the fights against Communist regimes. The fights to overturn the dictatorships in Egypt and Iran were led by the students.

The most famous resistance within Nazi Germany was The White Rose (a film of the same name was made). White Rose were students from Munich University. The Nazis always feared the free speech of the intellectuals. Hitler would not have to do such today. In America the students are the center of the suppression of free speech.

Instead of defending the First Amendment the professors have created a monster which is halting the First Amendment and their own right of free speech. The people who are historically the highest advocates for free expression have become the shock troops of abolition of such. Never would dictators think the universities and their students would be the principal source of free speech suppression. Never would they dream that their main source of grief would self-inflict the squelching of speech.

Hitler would be proud. So would Stalin, Mao, the Ayatollah…….. (Bruce Bialosky)

And Orwell.

Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past.”

“So much of left-wing thought is a kind of playing with fire by people who don’t even know that fire is hot.”

“The very concept of objective truth is fading out of the world. Lies will pass into history.”

Perfect example: Commentor Monty Hebert on a WP article about this very topic:

<Kathleen> Parker is in agreement here with a book asserting that both college campuses and “the liberal media” suppress free speech! Her concern seems more than a little disingenuous given that some (though certainly not all) colleges are among the last places left where liberal is not a dirty word. Free speech on college campuses is about as big a problem as the so called war on Christmas and Christians or discrimination against white males. If Parker wants to address a real problem she should express alarm and outrage at the way millions of people in my home state of Texas and across the South have been manipulated via Fox News, radio talk shows and truly vicious internet sites into distrusting and even hating the federal government, and demonizing the president of the United States. It is not the left that has profited from abolishment of the Fairness Doctrine.

The Ministry of Truth’s perfect warrior for the faith.

A mind is a terrible thing to waste. Yet, there are on college campuses all over the country.

And this is our future.

Be Afraid, Be Very Afraid.

The Ministry of Microagressions

Microaggressions – considered examples of subconscious racism. Because on the left everything and everybody is about racism. It is their greatest control mechanism ( call it micro-totalitarianism– Thomas Sowell does).

It is the whip they will wield to make you obey them. Thoughtcrimes are Racist and Racism is a Thoughtcrime.

You’re all racists and everything you do and say is racist so you must controlled to stop all those racist thoughts like:

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” –Dr. Martin Luther King.

Man what a naive racist! 🙂

George Orwell said, “There are some ideas so absurd that only an intellectual could believe them.” If one wants to discover the truth of Orwell’s statement, he need only step upon most college campuses.

Faculty leaders of the University of California consider certain statements racism and feel they should not be used in class. They call it micro-aggression. To them, micro-aggressive racist statements are: “America is the land of opportunity.” That is seen as perpetuating the myth of meritocracy. “There is only one race, the human race.” Such a statement is seen as denying the individual as a racial/cultural being. “I believe the most qualified person should get the job.” That’s “racist” because it gives the impression that “people of color are given extra unfair benefits because of their race.”

An initiative of UC President Janet Napolitano (former Head of Homeland Security -“Big Sis” to Big Brother- and Governor who never met an Illegal she’d didn’t love), aim to teach how to avoid offending students and peers, as well as how to hire a more diverse faculty (diverse meaning not white, not male, not christian). After all, inclusive is very exclusive. 🙂

These expressions don’t exhaust the list of micro-aggressions. Other seemingly innocuous statements deemed unacceptable are: “Everyone can succeed in this society, if they work hard enough,” “When I look at you, I don’t see color,” or “Affirmative action is racist.” Perhaps worst of all is, “Where are you from or where were you born?” For more of this, see a document released by The College Fix titled “Diversity in the Classroom,” UCLA Diversity and Faculty Development.

Star Trek’s IDIC (Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations) is racist.

“And the ways our differences combine to create meaning and beauty.”— Miranda and Spock, “Is There In Truth No Beauty?”

EVIL!

“I am pleased to see that we have differences. May we together become greater than the sum of both of us.”— ‘Surak’, “The Savage Curtain”

Racist!

Actual diversity is racist but the Left does it to promote diversity. The ultimate in Orwellian Doublethink and Doublespeak.

Perfect. 🙂

The handout also describes “raising the bar” as “elitist.”

University representative Shelly Meron said in an email Tuesday that “These seminars are not an attempt to curb open dialogue, debate or classroom discussions.”

Oh really?

“The quotes you referenced are taken directly from research done on this topic. We present this research literature/climate survey responses as examples so that faculty leaders can be more aware of the impact their actions or words may have on their students, and to provide faculty members with potential strategies to create an inclusive learning environment for all students.”

The inclusiveness of exclusivity! Free Speech by limiting it. Free Thought by thoughtcrime.

Orwell would be proud.

This micro-aggression nonsense, called micro-totalitarianism by my colleague Dr. Thomas Sowell , is nothing less than an attack on free speech. From the Nazis to the Stalinists, tyrants have always started out supporting free speech, and why is easy to understand. Speech is vital for the realization of their goals of command, control and confiscation. Free speech is a basic tool for indoctrination, propagandizing, proselytization. Once the leftists gain control, as they have at many universities, free speech becomes a liability and must be suppressed. This is increasingly the case on university campuses.

You have Free Speech as long as it is not a Thoughtcrime. And since basically everything is a thoughtcrime… 🙂

Daniel Henninger, deputy editor of The Wall Street Journal’s editorial page, writes about the campus attack on free speech and different ideas in his article titled “Obama Unleashes the Left: How the government created a federal hunting license for the far left.” He says that in the Harvard Crimson, an undergraduate columnist wrote: “Let’s give up on academic freedom in favor of justice. When an academic community observes research promoting or justifying oppression, it should ensure that this research does not continue.” The student was calling for the suppression of the research of conservative Harvard government professor Harvey Mansfield.

Oberlin College proposed that its teachers be aware of politically controversial topics such as “racism, classism, sexism, heterosexism, cissexism, ableism, capitalism and other issues of privilege and oppression.” The presumption that students must be protected rather than challenged in a classroom is at once infantilizing and anti-intellectual.

But perfectly Orwellian. The Ministry is proud.

Last year Vassar College faculty and students held a meeting to discuss the school’s movement to boycott Israel. Before the meeting, an English professor announced the dialogue would “not be guided by cardboard notions of civility.” That professor’s vision differs little from Adolf Hitler’s brown-shirted thugs of the paramilitary wing of the Nazi Party in their effort to crush dissent.

Azusa Pacific University “postponed” a speech by political scientist Charles Murray to avoid “hurting our faculty and students of color.” Brandeis University officials rescinded their invitation to Somali writer and American Enterprise Institute scholar Ayaan Hirsi Ali, whose criticisms of radical Islam were said to have violated the school’s “core values.” Brandeis officials claimed that allowing her to speak would be hurtful to Muslim students.

Western values of liberty are under ruthless attack by the academic elite on college campuses across America. These people want to replace personal liberty with government control; they want to replace equality before the law with entitlement. As such, they pose a far greater threat to our way of life than any terrorist organization or rogue nation. Leftist ideas are a cancer on our society. Ironically, we not only are timid in response, but also nourish those ideas with our tax dollars and charitable donations.

And these are the place your sending your little cherubs of joy to- to be indoctrinated and trained to be Leftist foot soldiers in the Army of Big Brother.

All Hail President Bernie Sanders! 🙂

They are Coming For You…

Mary Katharine Ham and I have written a new book, End of Discussion, which explores and exposes how the Left (primarily) increasingly seeks to “win” cultural and political debates by preventing them from happening. Instead, they move to delegitimize, disqualify and demonize their opponents through the impugning of motives, name-calling, and bullying — all of which is intended to raise the cost of disagreement, and to stifle open conversation. This phenomenon is born on college campuses (Chapter 5: “Speech Police Academy”), weaponized in DC, and has begun to permeate all aspects of American life (Chapter 2: “Everything’s a Thing”). Mary Katharine quasi-launched End of Discussion with Bill O’Reilly on Monday, then we appeared jointly on The Kelly File last night. Among other things, we analyzed stories illustrating how the Outrage Circus is making America less free (see the gay marriage purges in Chapter 8: “Bake Me A Cake Bigots”) and less fun (“Chapter 9: “The Uptight Citizens Brigade”):

End of Discussion is available in Hardcover, digital and audiobook editions. It’s on sale at Amazon, elsewhere online, and at retailers across America — including Barnes & Noble, Walmart, Books-A-Million, Costco, and others. By the way, I’m joining the ladies of ‘Outnumbered’ on Fox News as #OneLuckyGuy today at noon ET. Please tune in!  I’ll leave you with a link to Rare’s excerpt from our chapter on the “war on women” aspect of the Outrage Circus’ acrobatics, entitled, appropriately enough, “The Vagina Demagogues.”  Enjoy, and please buy the book!

Birthed By Liberal Educators for 12 years. Matured by Liberals at College. Then weaponized by DC politicians and then social “activists” all so the Thought Police can destroy your life if you even THINK of disagreeing with them!

Jerry Seinfield: Seinfeld says teens and college-aged kids don’t understand what it means to throw around certain politically-correct terms. “They just want to use these words: ‘That’s racist;’ ‘That’s sexist;’ ‘That’s prejudice,’” he said. “They don’t know what the f—k they’re talking about.”

He forgot the one of the Left’s favorites: “Islamophobia”.

Leno said much the same in March:

He said: ‘College kids now are so politically correct. I mean, to the point where — I’ll give you an example, we had interns at the show, college interns.

‘Like, the last year of the show, one of the interns comes and says, “Mr. Leno, I’m getting lunch. what do you want?’ I said, ‘I don’t know, where are you going?’

‘He said, “we’re getting Mexican.” I said, “I don’t really like Mexican.” He goes, “whoa, that’s kind of racist”.’
Leno then shouts: ‘That’s not racist.’

‘No, being anti-guacamole is not racist, okay? You have no idea what racism is. That’s not racist, you idiot, you moron.’ (Hot Air)

All the guys above are white dudes, which allows liberals to say, “Hey, aren’t you a white male? I think that’s enough out of you. End of Discussion.”

There’s a whole chapter in “End of Discussion” devoted to these battles called, “The Uptight Citizens Brigade.” We applaud Joan Rivers for her genuinely unapologetic approach to comedy. We highlight the ludicrous spectacle of the outrage industry going after the famous drinking card game, “Cards Against Humanity,” for a card that was offensive even though the entire reason for the card game’s existence and every card in it is EXPLICITLY TO OFFEND.

Go watch “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” with an audience. That is the most Politically Incorrect movie environment left on Earth.

Hint: every time Susan Sarandan’s (yes, her!) Janet says just about anything you yell “slut” at the screen. It’s so un-PC! 🙂

Their mission and their guarantee is that they WILL OFFEND everyone. Then you’ll have a good time doing it!

http://www.rockyhorror.htmlplanet.com/about.html

< Comedian Colin>Quinn believes that this PC mindset has expanded from colleges to American society as a whole in recent years. “Now people are outraged over any ‘buzzword’ that they think is offensive which has led to George Orwell version of ‘groupthink’ that demands conformity.”

Pizza anyone? 🙂

At The Spike TV Guys Choice Awards Clint Eastwood was introducing The Rock, he compared the San Andreas star to former athletes who have become actors, like “Jim Brown and Caitlyn Somebody…,”

That “somebody” was considered so “offensive” that it will be edited out of the broadcast.

Yes, just that. That’s all it took for the PC police to go nuclear!

You know what Eastwood’s guilty of? He’s guilty of trying to use Jenner as a punchline, irrespective of what the point of the joke is. And that really is a thoughtcrime first-degree, bordering on blasphemy, in the current media climate.

That’s it.

Enjoy that freedom of thought because the Left is gunning for you, RIGHT NOW!.

You racist, homophobic, islamophobic, hater you!

You will comply. You will conform. You will do as you are told and think only thoughts we have approved of.

END OF DISCUSSION. 🙂

Lesson Plan

“But if thought corrupts language, language can also corrupt thought.”- Orwell

Northwestern University is going to require all students to complete a course in diversity before they can graduate. Have our institutions of higher learning taken leave of their senses?

‘He who controls the past controls the future. He who controls the present controls the past.’- Orwell

“Power is in tearing human minds to pieces and putting them together again in new shapes of your own choosing.”- Orwell

According to a Northwestern student reporting in The College Fix, the school is “busy implementing an ambitious program for diversity on campus” on order to establish a “Social Inequalities and Diversities” requirement that “all students will have to complete before they graduate.”

Once this course is completed, “students will be able to ‘expand their ability to think critically,’ ‘recognize their own positionality in systems of inequality,’ and ‘engage in self-reflection on power and privilege.’

And what of math, science, literature and a bit of history? Aren’t the instruction of those and a few more academic courses the reason colleges and universities exist?

Higher education should be about teaching young Americans how to think, not what to think.(IBD)

Unless you’re a Liberal. Then it sound perfectly reasonable. After all, Orwell’s 1984, would approve so it must be correct.
“Until they became conscious they will never rebel, and until after they have rebelled they cannot become conscious.”- Orwell
“Orthodoxy means not thinking–not needing to think. Orthodoxy is unconsciousness.”- Orwell

They must think correctly first and be unconscious.  🙂

“Doublethink means the power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one’s mind simultaneously, and accepting both of them.”- Orwell

Like Spending More is “cutting” spending. 🙂  🙂

In 2007, for instance, the University of California-San Diego hired its first chancellor for equity, diversity and inclusion. For this position, the state pays $250,000 a year plus benefits.

Three years later, Heather Mac Donald writes in the spring 2013 issue of City Journal, “UC San Francisco appointed its first vice chancellor of diversity and outreach — with the starting salary of $270,000.”

This pseudo-schooling isn’t limited to the Left Coast or a school in Barack Obama’s hometown. Nor is it confined to students. Teachers at Virginia Polytechnic Institute were told a few years ago that promotions and tenure were going to be based on their participation in diversity initiatives, while the University of Louisville has held a “White Privilege Forum,” which delved into the matter of “white persons” running and/or owning “nearly half of the United States.”

Parents spend hundreds of thousands of dollars — more than $45,000 year for undergraduates at Northwestern — to school their kids in our finest institutions. Indoctrination into leftist politics should not be a part of the instruction.

“It’s a beautiful thing, the destruction of words.”- Orwell

But the Left would see as just “correct” and if you object you must be a narrow-minded, Neanderthal racist, bigot, misogynist, homophobic, right wing extremist tea party “terrorist”, right? 🙂
Then they vote Democrat, believe in Global Warming, veganism, class warfare,anti-capitalism,dependence,”green”, electric cars, and that Freedom is Slavery.
What could be better.
Oh, right, They get there news from Jon Stewart and The Ministry of Truth. 🙂
Nothing to worry about! 🙂
“If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face—for ever.”-Orwell
The fact that they are ignorant and dumbed down is perfect for manipulation by the Liberals. They like them mad (at non-liberals because it’s their fault!), dumb and happy.
“Now I will tell you the answer to my question. It is this. The Party seeks power entirely for its own sake. We are not interested in the good of others; we are interested solely in power, pure power. What pure power means you will understand presently. We are different from the oligarchies of the past in that we know what we are doing. All the others, even those who resembled ourselves, were cowards and hypocrites. The German Nazis and the Russian Communists came very close to us in their methods, but they never had the courage to recognize their own motives. They pretended, perhaps they even believed, that they had seized power unwillingly and for a limited time, and that just around the corner there lay a paradise where human beings would be free and equal. We are not like that. We know what no one ever seizes power with the intention of relinquishing it. Power is not a means; it is an end. One does not establish a dictatorship in order to safeguard a revolution; one makes the revolution in order to establish the dictatorship. The object of persecution is persecution. The object of torture is torture. The object of power is power. Now you begin to understand me.”-Orwell
But some progress can be made:

Here are some of the details from a new study published by the Friedman Foundation for Educational Choice.

This report surveys the empirical research on school choice. …the empirical evidence consistently shows that choice improves academic outcomes for participants and public schools, saves taxpayer money, moves students into more integrated classrooms, and strengthens the shared civic values and practices essential to American democracy.

The data on academic outcomes surely is the most important bit of information, so let’s specifically review those findings.

Twelve empirical studies have examined academic outcomes for school choice participants using random assignment, the “gold standard” of social science. Of these, 11 find that choice improves student outcomes—six that all students benefit and five that some benefit and some are not affected. One study finds no visible impact. No empirical study has found a negative impact.

And since I want to reduce the burden of government spending, let’s see whether school choice is good news for taxpayers.

Six empirical studies have examined school choice’s fiscal impact on taxpayers. All six find that school choice saves money for taxpayers. No empirical study has found a negative fiscal impact. (townhall)

So if we can get better Primary Schools then we have to just get better College so the advantages are not swamped by Liberals.

“We do not merely destroy our enemies; we change them.”- Orwell

“What can you do, thought Winston, against the lunatic who is more intelligent than yourself, who gives your arguments a fair hearing and then simply persists in his lunacy?”- Orwell

No They Cant! The Sequel

John Stossel: President Obama said in his State of the Union Address that he is putting colleges on notice to lower costs. A few days later, he spoke to students at the University of Michigan, with a promise of more federal aid. Politicians claim they can make college affordable. No They Can’t!

In the last 30 years, inflation is up 160%, but tuition costs are up 750%.

It’s because colleges have no incentive to cut prices when students can get money from government. Federal aid, adjusted for inflation, increased from 32 billion in 1987, to 169 billion in 2010.

Government tells us, “Here’s the gap between what you can afford and what the college is charging, we will now make up that gap. And then the college just inches up the tuition a little bit higher,” says Naomi Riley author of The Faculty Lounges: and Other Reasons Why You Won’t Get the College Education You Paid For.

Colleges don’t use all or even most of that money in the classroom. We were stunned at the gyms and dining halls that serve lobster and sushi. Check out the University of Missouri, which is proud of its spa, rock climbing wall and “Tiger Grotto” – an elaborate pool complex.

Government creates perverse incentives. Colleges compete on prestige and luxury amenities, not their price tag. Administrators don’t worry about high tuition costs because their customers have government subsidies.

And so what if they graduate with a mountain of debt and their job prospect are sh*t. They government will take of them too. And if ObamaCare survives they can be on their parents Health Insurance until they are 26.

And they’ve been raised by the liberal socialists to believe they are entitled to be look after just because.

So who cares, the Government will take care of you. You may remember that The Obama Administration took over the  student loans because they were going bankrupt.

2010: President Obama will sign a bill today that ends a 45-year-old program under which banks and other private-sector lenders such as Sallie Mae receive a federal subsidy for making government-guaranteed college loans.

Instead, the U.S. Department of Education – which already makes roughly a third of these loans through its direct-lending program – will make 100 percent of them starting July 1.

Students who previously had to choose a private-sector lender for their guaranteed loans will now have only one choice: the government. (SFGATE)

But the newly passed legislation does nothing to address the rapidly rising cost of education–and adds to our national debt. (Forbes)

A “single payer” system, you might say. 🙂

And costs are up 5 times inflation because colleges only incentive is to spend more to make college look like an French Riviera resort.

Costs? Who gives a crap about costs. The Government is paying for it.

Then they graduate and reality hits them in the face.

Students who graduated from college in 2010 with student loans owed an average of $25,250, up 5 percent from the previous year, according to a report scheduled for release Thursday.

The average debt — once again the highest on record — came as the class of 2010 faced an unemployment rate for new college graduates of 9.1 percent, the highest in recent years, according to the report by the Project on Student Debt, which pointed out that unemployment rates for those without college degrees were still higher.

The median starting salary for students graduating from four-year colleges in 2009 and 2010 was $27,000, down from $30,000 for those who entered the work force in 2006 to 2008, according to a study released on Wednesday by the John J. Heldrich Center for Workforce Development at Rutgers University. That is a decline of 10 percent, even before taking inflation into account.

35 percent of unemployed college graduates have been without a job for a year or longer. And, the long-term unemployment rate for those 25 and older is almost the same across the board—regardless of educational level.

Sidenote: remember, most report unemployment statistics don’t count people who have given up completely looking for a job.

CNN Last week: But the competition is steep, with employers reporting that they have received nearly 33 applications for every job posting, up from 21 applications per posting last year.

Enter Occupiers. “Entitled” little skulls of  unemployed (and many cases unemployable narcissistic and anarchist) socialist mush who have had reality hit them in the face and they just want to whine about it.

New York Times: The high cost of college and the growing debt burden of student loans have become increasingly potent political issues in recent years, high on the agenda of Occupy Wall Street and related protests across the country.

And then there’s the next line of graduate-in-waiting: Teenagers

The high teen unemployment rate, which came in at 23.8% for February (2012). Their unemployment rate remains above 20% for the 40th month in a row, the first time this has happened since the government started keeping records in 1948.

And since Obama was elected the first by getting naive 20-somethings to believe in his Messianic self he has to throw bones to his peeps, especially as their support has cooled over the years because a lot of them are not college students anymore but unemployed and underemployed debtors.

So he’ll need a new crop of naive morons to vote for him.

“Student debt goes up and it doesn’t ever go down,” said Mark Kantrowitz, the publisher of Finaid.org and Fastweb.com, two Web sites that offer advice on paying for college. “We’re clearly heading in the direction of decreased college affordability. Among lower-income students, the canaries in the cage that squawk first, we’re already seeing a decline in enrollment in four-year colleges and an increase in lower-cost two-year institutions,” he said.

Mr. Kantrowitz estimated that for the class of 2011, average debt was $27,200 — or, if parent loans were included, $34,000.

This is the fifth consecutive year in which the public universities that serve most students raised their tuition at a faster rate than the far more expensive private universities. (NYT)

So that’s why Obama has proposed….<<Drum Roll>> SPENDING EVEN MORE on student loan programs!!!

Now, I know that’s a shocker! 🙂

So when in Debt SPEND EVEN MORE!

When the system is bleeding red ink and it’s failing SPEND EVEN MORE!

When your house is burning down throw more Napalm on the Fire that will help!!

Liberal Economics at it’s finest.

But don’t worry, It’s all the Republicans! and “the rich”‘s Fault! 🙂

No They Can’t! And More

http://www.scribd.com/doc/85637905/No-They-Can-t-by-John-Stossel

Politicians say “Yes, we can!” and claim they solve our problems.

When the mortgage market crashed, the President said their new law, Dodd-Frank, would create a “new financial system” so such things would never happen again.

After 9/11, Senator Tom Daschle declared “you can’t professionalize if you don’t federalize!” The Senate voted 100-0 to create the TSA to run airport security.

Politicians’ promises are endless. They say they’ll: create jobs, “make college affordable for all,” protect the disabled, give disadvantaged kids a head start, and invest in “cutting edge innovation.”

But they can’t achieve what they promise.

•Billionaire Mark Cuban and other job-creators explain why government’s rules now prevent the job creation that was once America’s hallmark.

•Dodd-Frank, instead of stopping fraud, added layers to already incomprehensible banking laws. Stossel shows how simple rules in the Cayman Islands not only stop fraud, but they also create prosperity.

•While the TSA creates long lines, misses actual terrorists, and angers passengers, screeners working for a private company at one big airport work faster, more cheerfully, and find more contraband. We show how the private company does it.

Namely, San Francisco’s Airport (the mecca of Liberalism) has Private Security and it works vastly better than the TSA.

I know the most scrutiny I got from my last Trip to Wales was actually from my stop over in Amsterdam.

Did you know that the U of Missouri is proud to have a “leisure resort” on campus? Naomi Riley, author of The Faculty Lounges: And Other Reasons Why You Won’t Get the College Education You Pay For, explains how government aid led to massive tuition hikes.

•Since the Americans with Disabilities Act took effect, fewer disabled people have been able to work.

•Lisa Snell from the Reason Foundation explains how the government’s own research found that Head Start did not help poor kids. Government’s response? Spend even more.

Government grows, despite its repeated failure.

Politicians are wrong when they say “Yes, we can”, but the fact that government can’t doesn’t mean that we can’t. Free people accomplish wonderful things. While government wastes billions on boondoggles like Solyndra, X-prize founder Peter Diamandis explains how private investors have created cars that get 100mpg, space ships, and much faster ways to clean up oil spills, all without charging taxpayers a penny.

Without big government, life can be great.

AN EXAMPLE

Everyone loves the Head Start program. Politicians across the ideological spectrum-from former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to President George W. Bush-have praised the program and called it a success.

They should read the government’s own research.

The ‘Head Start Impact Study‘ was a report conducted by the federal government. It followed and compared underprivileged kids who went to Head Start, and underprivileged kids who didn’t. The study found no difference between the two groups.

Zero.

The kids who went to Head Start did better while they were in Head Start, but one year later the benefits were all gone. Not by 5th grade. Not by 3rd grade. By 1st grade, the benefits were “largely absent”.

Since President Obama has pledged over and over to “eliminate programs that don’t work”, it seems like Head Start would be a natural to get cut.

Nope.

That’s not how big government works. Even after the report came out, the Obama administration has continued to massively increase spending on Head Start by more than a billion dollars.

In my Fox News special “No They Can’t”, I talk to Congressman Keith Ellison, co-chair of the Progressive Caucus, who in spite of the evidence insists Head Start works. When I confront him on the data, he falls back on a familiar argument: we need to spend more.

Give me a break. We’ve spent 180 billion dollars already, with nothing to show for it.

The government just can’t do it.

EXAMPLE 2

That’s how much you’ll need to buy the Energy Department’s prize-winning light bulb. (You know because Thomas Edison’s Incandescent Light Bulb was deemed politically correct by the Whacko Environmentalist Left).

Last year the government announced a $10 million prize “designed to spur lighting manufacturers to develop high-quality, high-efficiency solid-state lighting products to replace the common light bulb.” The winner? A light bulb that costs $50 each.

Only in the government would they think it was “progress” worth celebrating to replace something you can buy on Amazon.com for a little more than $1 with something that costs $50.

“I don’t want to say it’s exorbitant, but if a customer is only looking at the price, they could come to that conclusion,”Home Depot worker Brad Paulsen told the Washington Post. (Fox Business)

EXAMPLE 3 FOOD POLICE:

Public health: The toxic truth about sugar

This was headline in a Nature Magazine article that basically said sugar was bad a tobacco and alcohol and need to be sold behind the counter . Anti-obesity Meme Roth says yes, to protect the interests of kids.

Ah, it’s “for the children” so you can’t possibly object now can you?

Coke is the New Cocaine. Wait, in the 19th Century it was made with cocaine…)

🙂

And It’s Government to the Rescue!!!

WANT MORE

Kids who open lemonade stands are now shutdown by police. I tried to open a lemonade stand legally in NYC. That was quite an adventure. It takes 65 days to get permission from the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

With government adding 80,000 pages of rules and regulations every year, it’s no surprise that regular people break laws without even trying.

A family in Idaho can’t build a home on their land because the EPA says it’s a wetland-but it only resembles a wetland because a government drain malfunctioned and flooded it.

Ever hear of a real wetland in Idaho??

Want to start a taxi business? Too bad – it’s illegal. Illegal, that is, unless you buy a government-issued “taxi medallion” that can cost as much as a million dollars. One city has a free market for cabs – Washington, DC – but lobbyists there are pushing to regulate.
Sen. Dick Durbin reacts to the tornadoes in Dallas, Texas earlier this week. Durbin calls for more laws regulating carbon output while he sends a dire warning that we must convert to hybrid cars or lose our life. Durbin says we must spend money now to fix the problem.

“It’s your money or your life,” he said a press conference. “We are either going to dedicate ourselves to a cleaner, more livable planet and accept the initial investment necessary or we’re going to pay a heavier price in terms of loss of human life, damage and costs associated with it.” (RCP)

NEVER LET A TRAGEDY GO BY WITHOUT PUSHING THE GLOBAL WARMING AGENDA!
Now that’s “compassion” at it’s finest.
But some good news: A San Francisco judge has dismissed a proposed class-action lawsuit that sought to stop McDonald’s Corp. from using toys to market its meals to children in the Golden State. The suit had been filed in late 2010 by Monet Parham, a California mother of two, and The Center for Science in the Public Interest, a consumer advocacy group based in Washington, D.C.
After all, McDonald’s was and is just a Capitalist Predator out to ensnare your children in crack-addicted life of junk food and obesity!!!
<<Maniacal Laugh>>
And Finally, the ever reliable whacko, DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman-Schultz:
“You know, what Mitt Romney and the Republicans have been doing to themselves every single day is showing women in this country day after day that they are callously indifferent to women’s health, to the priorities of women,” DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz told MSNBC on Thursday night. Really as evidenced by their obsession with cultural issues, their obsession with making sure that women can’t have affordable access to birth control, the dismissive way that the Chairman of the Republican National Committee today chalked up women being concerned about making sure that we could have affordable access to preventive screenings like mammograms as fictional as a war on caterpillars. You know, if they’re still wondering why there’s an 18-point gender gap and President Obama is ahead of Mitt Romney by that many points, then they really — they really must believe these things that they’re saying.

“Shocking,” Wasserman Schultz added.

Wasserman Schultz also says Mitt Romney is trying to “out-right-wing” his fellow Republicans. Here’s what she had to say at

“I think Mitt Romney has been so focused on trying to out-right-wing and embrace extremism that he is really beholden and has tied himself to his support for personhood amendments, his belief that Roe versus Wade was one of the worst decisions handed down by the Supreme Court, his support for the Blunt-Rubio amendment which says that bosses get to decide for their female employees what kind of access to health care they can have. And so every day there’s another example of how out of touch the Republicans are,” Wasserman Schultz said later in the interview conducted by MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell.  (Who also ripped Romney for being…<dramatic shock sting> A MORMON! Lord have Mercy we can’t elect a nutcase from a fringe religion now would you!!!) Except an Alinsky cultist called Barack Hussein Obama that is.

“Mitt Romney wants to be President of the United States, yet he fails to recognize what’s important to women. We just want to make sure that the guy in the White House is focused on creating jobs, getting the economy turned around, and making sure that as members of the middle class and working families that we have an opportunity to be successful to not just focusing on people who already are,” she said.

So when is Obama going to do that? He’s been there since 2009… 🙂
“In this present crisis, government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem. From time to time we’ve been tempted to believe that society has become too complex to be managed by self-rule, that government by an elite group is superior to government for, by, and of the people. Well, if no one among us is capable of governing himself, then who among us has the capacity to govern someone else? All of us together, in and out of government, must bear the burden.” –President Ronald Reagan.
And God know these Liberals Never Let A Crisis Go to Waste! 🙂
