Kids Create Salt Black Markets in Cafeterias Due to Michelle Obama’s Lunch Rules

School kids around the country are tweeting rather unfortunate pictures of the meals they’re being served at lunchtime, and thanking first lady and healthy school food advocate Michelle Obama for their bowls of mush and mystery proteins. The tweets, which have carried the not-so-subtle #ThanksMichelleObama hashtag, were being sent out at a rate of 40 per minute (WP  11/2014)

The Union Label

Liberal Doublethink alert: UNIONS against Minimum Wage Increase!

Last week, the Los Angeles City Council approved an increase in the legally required minimum wage to result in a minimum wage of $15.00 per hour by 2020. During the months preceding the City Council’s decision, the underlying intellectual position in favor of the increase in the minimum wage was that everyone should receive a living wage. The arguments against raising the minimum wage revolve around the possibility that certain businesses such as restaurants will close based on their inability to pass along such wage increases to their customers. Opponents also argue that jobs will move elsewhere, whether it is another U.S. city or overseas if the minimum wage is increased.

The arguments presented above have not changed very much over the past fifty years. It is axiomatic that most interested individuals would like to see minimum wage discussions disappear because the overall community is more highly educated and lower wage jobs are the province of young individuals who will soon move into the marketplace of skills and ideas. Sadly, such is not the case.

Enter the union leaders of Los Angeles. Now, the Federation of Labor in Los Angeles is asking for exemptions from the minimum wage for companies where the workers are represented by a union. The position is that workers represented by unions should have leeway to negotiate a wage below the amount mandated by law. The underlying theory according to Randy Hicks, a leader of both the county Federation of Labor and the Raise the Wage coalition is ” “With a collective bargaining agreement, a business owner and the employees negotiate an agreement that works for them both. The agreement allows each party to prioritize what is important to them. This provision gives the parties the option, the freedom, to negotiate that agreement. And that is a good thing.”

And now, the Mad Hatter enters stage left. Apparently, only a union worker should be able to work for a wage that is less than a ‘living wage’. And that union worker is apparently able to work for that lower wage and also able to pay union dues to support the crack union negotiating team working to procure or maintain his or her wages that are less than those required by the new minimum wage law.

In this Alice in Wonderland proposal by the unions, two identical restaurants serving the same food, hiring from the same labor force, located on the same street and owned by the same person could be operating under two different sets of laws with respect to the wages paid to their employees. Restaurant A, operating under a union contract, would be able to negotiate wages less than the minimum wage. Restaurant B, operating without a union contract, would be forced to pay a minimum wage higher than the wages paid by Restaurant A. Likely, Restaurant A would charge their customers lower prices than Restaurant B and drive Restaurant B out of business costing the employees of Restaurant B their higher paying jobs.

It does sound like the unions are looking for their own form of crony capitalism in Los Angeles. Who would think that the unions would accept and lobby for lower wages for their members in an effort to compete successfully with entities paying higher wages to their employees? What is the purpose of a union if it is attempting to successfully negotiate lower compensation for its members? Only in Wonderland, also known as Los Angeles. (Townhall)

LA Times:

Landmark plan to boost the Los Angeles minimum wage took another step forward Friday, as a panel of city lawmakers vetted a draft ordinance putting the pay hikes into law.

But a host of complex and divisive questions about the plan will likely remain unanswered even after the law is passed — including whether unionized companies will ultimately be able to opt out of the wage requirements if their workers agree.

“This is an ongoing process,” City Councilman Curren Price, who heads the Economic Development Committee, said Friday. “There’s still a lot of things to be resolved.”

Passing a Law to find out what’s in it is the latest fad trend in “transparency” these days.🙂

When it takes up the proposed law next Wednesday, the full council is widely expected to pass the ordinance, which would gradually increase the citywide minimum to $15 hourly rate by July 2020. But because the pay hikes do not start until the middle of next year, officials could make changes to the law before the increases begin.

Political and Union maneuvering, just like on ObamaCare, where the unions were the ones that got the vast majority of the exemptions.

And of course, Unions are a Democrat money machine so they always get what they want.

So, yes, you could likely get Liberals voting to exempt Unions from “living wage” but still be Democrats who are fighting for it.

Orwell, is proud of you my sons.

But here’s the secret:

Labor leaders also pressed to include some controversial wording that could exempt unionized companies from the wage requirements if management negotiates a waiver with workers. Business groups have attacked that idea as a gambit to prod more companies to unionize.

Rusty Hicks, who heads the county labor federation, said that would provide union workers the flexibility to trade off pay for other benefits that might be more important to them.

“This isn’t a secretive way to incentivize workers to organize, or about paying union workers less than they deserve,” Hicks told reporters before the hearing. “This is about staying consistent with previous provisions and crafting something that will withstand legal scrutiny.”

Wanna pay less, well then you have to unionize and when you unionize the Union will screw you and your employees for Union Dues that will go the The Democrats!!

But the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce and other major business groups criticized the proposed exemption as defying the stated goals of the minimum wage ordinance. They pointed out that labor activists had previously opposed a number of suggested exemptions for other kinds of businesses, saying no one should have a “subminimum wage.”

They were for it, before they vote against it!🙂

If the exemption is approved, “it will replace the mantra of helping the working poor with hollow rhetoric that enables organizers to sign up more dues-paying members,” Chamber President Gary Toebben wrote in a letter to Price this week.

Ta Da!  More money for The Democrats. More Union control of the means of production.

Crafty, aren’t they.

Many labor activists have raised concerns about how L.A. will ensure that the new wage rules are enforced. City officials pressed forward Friday with a plan to create a new city division to crack down on employers who pay less than the minimum wage.

More Bureaucrats, more control…Gee, that never happens when Liberals attack!🙂

The Black Hole of Liberalism

Political Cartoons by Gary Varvel

So now the federal health bureaucrats in charge of controlling diseases and pandemics want more money to do their jobs. Hmph. Maybe if they hadn’t been so busy squandering their massive government subsidies on everything but their core mission, we taxpayers might actually feel a twinge of sympathy.

At $7 billion, the Centers for Disease Control 2014 budget is nearly 200 percent bigger now than it was in 2000. Those evil, stingy Republicans actually approved CDC funding increases in January larger than what President Obama requested.

What are we getting for this ever-increasing amount of money? Answer: A power-hungry busybody brigade of politicized blame-mongers.

Sounds like typical progressive liberalism to me.

Money, money, it’s always the money. Yet, while Ebola and enterovirus D68 wreak havoc on our health system, the CDC has been busying itself with an ever-widening array of non-disease control campaigns, like these recent crusades:

–Mandatory motorcycle helmet laws. CDC Director Dr. Thomas Frieden appoints a 15-member “Community Preventive Services Task Force” to promote pet Nanny State projects. An obscure Obamacare rule — Section 4003(b)(1) — stealthily increased the task force’s authority to study “any policies, programs, processes or activities designed to affect or otherwise affecting health at the population level.” Last year, the meddling panel extended the agency’s reach into transportation safety with a call to impose a federal universal motorcycle helmet law on the country. Is riding a Harley a disease? Why is this the CDC’s business?

–Video games and TV violence. At Obama’s behest, in the wake of high-profile school shootings, the CDC scored $10 million last year to study violent video games and media images, as well as to assess “existing strategies for preventing gun violence and identifying the most pressing research questions, with the greatest potential public health impact.” Whatever that means. Why is this the CDC’s business?

–Playground equipment. The CDC’s “Injury Centers” (Did you know there are 13 of them?) have crafted a “national action plan” and funded countless studies to prevent boo-boos and accidents on the nation’s playgrounds. Apparently, there aren’t enough teachers, parents, local school districts, and county and state regulators to police the slides and seesaws. Why is this the CDC’s business?

–“Social norming” in the schools. The CDC has funded studies and campaigns “promoting positive community norms” and “safe, stable, nurturing relationships (SSNRs)” in homes and schools. It’s the mother of all government values clarifications programs. So bad attitudes are now a disease. Again, I ask: Why is this the CDC’s business?

How about more agenda driven BS (from The Hill):

Senate Democrats are asking the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) how research is coming on gun violence.

Democratic Sens. Ed Markey (Mass.), Charles Schumer (N.Y.), Kirsten Gillibrand (N.Y.), Richard Blumenthal (Conn.) and Brian Schatz (Hawaii) sent a letter to CDC Director Tom Frieden on Friday asking for a progress report on the current state of research at the agency on the causes and prevention of gun violence.

“Gun violence kills or injures more than 10,000 children a year. It kills more than 30,000 people each year. It destroys families and damages communities. It is a public health crisis in every sense of the word, and it is critical that we treat it is as such,” the senators wrote.Last year, President Obama asked the CDC to research gun violence after the shooting in Newtown, Conn., where 20 first-graders were killed. Lawmakers asked the CDC if they have a budget and timeline for conducting studies on guns.

“Part of these efforts must include serious substantive research into the problem of gun violence in order to better craft additional strategies with which to combat it,” the letter stated. “Unfortunately, there have been no clear signs that the CDC is beginning to implement this agenda.”

Markey has also called for legislation that would provide the CDC with $10 million a year for six years in order to conduct more research on gun violence prevention and firearms safety.

That has to be way more important than Ebola because it’s part of THE AGENDA!

After every public health disaster, CDC bureaucrats play the money card while expanding their regulatory and research reach into anti-gun screeds, anti-smoking propaganda, anti-bullying lessons, gender inequity studies and unlimited behavior modification programs that treat individual vices — personal lifestyle choices — as germs to be eradicated.

Just like Liberal educators are always wanting more money for their failures.

As I have said on many, many occasions, Liberals are the Greediest people on Earth.

Their failures are always someone elses fault and because they didn’t have enough money (thus enough power) to do it with (which is also someone else fault). So you have to feed the beast and give them more money and more power so that they can succeed.

But it’s a perpetual motion machine, enough is never enough for a Liberal. They never worker smarter. They don’t have to. They are always on the side of right and Light so denying them anything and everything they want is Darkness. Pure and simple.

Here’s a reminder of what the CDC does with money that’s supposed to go to real disease control. In 2000, the agency essentially lied to Congress about how it spent up to $7.5 million earmarked each year since 1993 for research on the deadly hantavirus. “Instead, apparently without asking Congress, the CDC spent much of the money on other programs that the agency thought needed the funds more,” The Washington Post found. The diversions were impossible to trace because of shoddy CDC bookkeeping practices. The CDC also misspent $22.7 million appropriated for chronic fatigue syndrome and was investigated in 2001 for squandering $13 million on hepatitis C research.

So when a real potential plague rears it’s ugly head?

Time to play the partisan card! (especially 3 weeks from an election)

Democrats have rushed out of the gate with an attack ad against Republicans claiming if only we had spent more money, we would be able to solve the Ebola situation.

It’s a defensive ad that reeks of desperation. At a time when more and more Americans, including millennials, are concluding government just doesn’t work, it probably won’t be effective. And Republicans can respond in kind.

For example, instead of studying Ebola, the National Institutes of Health were studying the propensity of lesbians to be fat.

Then there was the money for a study on wives who calm down quickly.

And the Centers for Disease Control spent its budget on gun violence studies on order of the President as part of his agenda to curtail the second amendment.

The CDC also spent its money to survey what bus riders thought of HIV videos.

Hey, and let’s not forget all the money the CDC spent to convince people to stop smoking and now we need tobacco to manufacture the drug to fight Ebola. Classic. (Red State)

But it’s not their fault! They are the Angels of Best Intentions and Compassion so it must be those evil Satans of Conservatism that have caused all this suffering and strife!

As I pointed out years ago, the CDC has its own private funding pipeline in the form of “Friends of CDC,” an Atlanta-based group of deep-pocketed corporations, now including ATT, Costco, General Motors, Google, IBM and Microsoft. To date, the entity has raised some $400 million to support the CDC’s work. (Michelle Malkin)

But there is not enough money in the universe to satisfy the addicted hunger of a Liberal.

The Blueprint for Success

Recovery Summer III: Unemployment Rate goes up to 8.3%. But don’t worry he’s got a plan…🙂

“You have a choice to make,” he intones. “It’s a choice between two very different plans for our country.” Then he warns: “Gov. Romney’s plan would cut taxes for the folks at the very top. Roll back regulations on big banks. And he says that if we do, our economy will grow and everyone will benefit.” Obama continues: “But you know what? We tried that top-down approach. It’s what caused the mess in the first place.”

It’s plain the president is trying to portray Romney as a continuation of Bush economic policies — which he describes as more tax cuts and deregulation — and which he contends caused the recession and stunted the recovery. Of course, this is revisionism writ large. (IBD)

There is a pattern here. But first, a little demonstration of actions have consequences and how not to advance in your career.

The Berater Hater of Chick-Fil-A whom posted his snarky video about berating an employee for hating homosexuals lost his cushy executive job over it.

Mr. Adam Smith is an Adjunct Lecturer at Eller College in Tucson, Arizona  (and has made lectures at the very liberal University of Arizona) and he also WAS the CFO of Vante, a catheter manufacturing company (and removed from the U of A website).

Adam Smith, formerly Chief Financial Officer at Vante, stepped down after the video — which Smith shot and uploaded himself —caused embarrassment to the company.

The video was picked up by countless blogs. Before Smith took it off of YouTube, others had downloaded it and re-posted it. Both the escapade and its fallout filled Tucson-linked tweets.

Smith, who served as an adjunct lecturer at the University of Arizona last semester, filmed himself berating a drive-thru employee at Chick-fil-A,

In the video, which runs 2 minutes, 21 seconds, Smith enters the drive-thru, explaining that he’s ordered a free cup of water. Once the employee hands him his cup, he lambastes her employer, calling Chick-fil-A “a hateful corporation” and “a horrible corporation with horrible values” that “gives money to hate groups.”

In Smith’s video, the employee at the drive-through window, taken aback, tells Smith that she’s uncomfortable being filmed. Smith does not back off.

“I don’t know how you live with yourself and work here,” Smith says to the employee, before calling himself “totally heterosexual” and saying there’s “not a gay in me” and “I just can’t stand the hate.” He also says he’s “I’m a nice guy, by the way.”

The whole quote: ”I’m a nice guy, by the way… totally heterosexual. Not a gay in me, I just can’t stand the hate.”

But he can now stand in the Unemployment line!!!🙂

After he’s done talking to her, he says he thinks he “just did something really good” and “I feel purposeful.”

Roger Vogel, Chairman, President and CEO of Vante, said the decision for Smith to step down was mutual. Vogel said he was “shocked” by the video, which he first discovered when people emailed him a link.

The following is a statement from Vante: Vante regrets the unfortunate events that transpired yesterday in Tucson between our former CFO/Treasurer Adam Smith and an employee at Chick-fil-A. Effective immediately, Mr. Smith is no longer an employee of our company.

The “tolerant” Left at it’s best:

And as a Former CFO (“rich”), I doubt he qualifies for Food Stamps.🙂
President Barack Obama on Wednesday signed an Executive Order fiat AGAIN!!
Obama’s executive order comes in the wake of a new report by the National Urban League’s Policy Institute that warned the president could lose three key battleground states — Virginia, North Carolina and Ohio — if African-American voters don’t match their strong turnout of 2008 in this year’s election.
And how is he going to do it: More Public Sector Government Bureaucrats!
There is established the Federal Interagency Working Group on Educational Excellence for African Americans (Working Group), which shall be convened and chaired by the Initiative’s Executive Director and that shall support the efforts of the Initiative described in subsection (b) of this section.
More Government is always his answer!!!🙂
It will include senior officials from several federal agencies — including the Departments of Education, Justice and Labor — which have gained increased power over state education policies since 2009.The progressives campaign for race-based discipline policies also won a victory in Maryland July 24.

The state’s board of education established a policy demanding that each racial or ethnic group receive roughly proportional level of school penalties, regardless of the behavior by members of each group.

The board’s decision requires that “the state’s 24 school systems track data to ensure that minority and special education students are not unduly affected by suspensions, expulsions and other disciplinary measures,” said a July 25 Washington Post report.

His July 26 executive order established a government panel to promote “a positive school climate that does not rely on methods that result in disparate use of disciplinary tools.”

So the best way to address this disparate use is to bust more evil White People! Because now you have a quota. You discipline a black kid, you have to bust a white one or else you’re being “disparate”.🙂
And with new bureaucrats that have a mindset to fight against Whites getting away with stuff that blacks don’t this can only make schools better!🙂

Dianis’ project is also a law firm that litigates race-related questions, and it gains from laws and regulations that spur race-related legal disputes.

“The combination of overly harsh school policies … has created a ‘schoolhouse-to-jailhouse track,’ in which punitive measures such as suspensions, expulsions, and school-based arrests are increasingly used to deal with student misbehavior,” claimed the group’s website.

This “is a racial justice crisis, because the students pushed out through harsh discipline are disproportionately students of color,” the group insisted.

The administration had previously advertised its support for the campaign to impose race-based discipline policies.

In February, Attorney General Eric Holder claimed that “we’ve often seen that students of color, students from disadvantaged backgrounds, and students with special needs are disproportionately likely to be suspended or expelled.”

“This is, quite simply, unacceptable. … These unnecessary and destructive policies must be changed,” he said in his speech, given in Atlanta, Ga.

There’s a pattern here.

Ann Coulter: Mitt Romney presents one enormous problem for Barack Obama’s campaign: No divorce records. That’s why the media are so hot to get their hands on Romney’s tax records for the past 25 years. They need something to “pick through, distort and lie about” — as the Republican candidate says.

Obama’s usual campaign method, used in 100 percent of his races, has been to pry into the private records of his opponents.

Democrats aren’t going to find any personal dirt on the clean-cut Mormon, so they need complicated tax filings going back decades in order to create the illusion of scandal out of boring financial records.

Romney has already released his 2010 tax return and is about to release his 2011 return. After all the huffing and puffing by the media demanding those returns, the follow-up story vanished remarkably quickly when the only thing the return showed was that Romney pays millions of dollars in taxes and gives a lot of money to charity.

Let’s take a romp down memory lane and review the typical Obama campaign strategy. Obama became a U.S. senator only by virtue of David Axelrod’s former employer, the Chicago Tribune, ripping open the sealed divorce records of Obama’s two principal opponents.

One month before the 2004 Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate, Obama was down in the polls, about to lose to Blair Hull, a multimillionaire securities trader. But then the Chicago Tribune leaked the claim that Hull’s second ex-wife, Brenda Sexton, had sought an order of protection against him during their 1998 divorce proceedings.

Those records were under seal, but as The New York Times noted: “The Tribune reporter who wrote the original piece later acknowledged in print that the Obama camp had ‘worked aggressively behind the scenes’ to push the story.” Many people said Axelrod had “an even more significant role — that he leaked the initial story.”

Both Hull and his ex-wife opposed releasing their sealed divorce records, but they finally relented in response to the media’s hysteria — 18 days before the primary. Hull was forced to spend four minutes of a debate detailing the abuse allegation in his divorce papers, explaining that his ex-wife “kicked me in the leg and I hit her shin to try to get her to not continue to kick me.”

After having held a substantial lead just a month before the primary, Hull’s campaign collapsed with the chatter about his divorce. Obama sailed to the front of the pack and won the primary. Hull finished third with 10 percent of the vote.

As luck would have it, Obama’s opponent in the general election had also been divorced! Jack Ryan was tall, handsome, Catholic — and shared a name with one of Harrison Ford’s most popular onscreen characters! He went to Dartmouth, Harvard Law and Harvard Business School, made hundreds of millions of dollars as a partner at Goldman Sachs, and then, in his early 40s, left investment banking to teach at an inner city school on the South Side of Chicago.

Ryan would have walloped Obama in the Senate race. But at the request of — again — the Chicago Tribune, California Judge Robert Schnider unsealed the custody papers in Ryan’s divorce five years earlier from Hollywood starlet Jeri Lynn Ryan, the bombshell Borg on “Star Trek: Voyager.”

Jack Ryan had released his tax records. He had released his divorce records. But both he and his ex-wife sought to keep the custody records under seal to protect their son.

Amid the 400 pages of filings from the custody case, Jack Ryan claimed that his wife had had an affair, and she counterclaimed with the allegation that he had taken her to “sex clubs” in Paris, New York and New Orleans, which drove her to fall in love with another man.

(Republicans: If you plan a career in public office, please avoid marrying a wacko.)

Ryan had vehemently denied her allegations at the time, but it didn’t matter. The sex club allegations aired on “Entertainment Tonight,” “NBC Nightly News,” ABC’s “Good Morning America,” “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno” and NBC’s “Today” show. CNN covered the story like it was the first moon landing.

(Interestingly, international papers also were ablaze with the story — the same newspapers that were supposed to be so bored with American sexual mores during Bill Clinton’s sex scandal.)

Four days after Judge Schnider unsealed the custody records, Ryan dropped out of the race for the horror of (allegedly) propositioning his own wife and then taking “no” for an answer.

Alan Keyes stepped in as a last-minute Republican candidate.

And that’s how Obama became a U.S. senator. He destroyed both his Democratic primary opponent and his Republican general election opponent with salacious allegations about their personal lives taken from “sealed” court records.

Obama’s team delved into Sarah Palin’s marriage and spread rumors of John McCain’s alleged affair in 2008 and they smeared Herman Cain in 2011 with hazy sexual harassment allegations all emanating from David Axelrod’s pals in Chicago.

It’s almost like a serial killer’s signature. Unsealed personal records have been released to the press. Obama must be running for office!

So you can see what a pickle the Obama campaign is in having to run against a Dudley Do-Right, non-drinking, non-smoking, God-fearing, happily married Mormon.

They’ve got to get their hands on thousands of pages of Romney’s tax filings so that the media can — as Romney says — lie about them. It will be interesting to see if Obama can pick the lock of the famously guarded IRS.

And if not, an Executive Order Fiat from The King is always the blueprint for success.

The Department of Homeland Security will soon be using a laser at airports that can detect everything about you from over 160-feet away.

A scanner that could read people at the molecular level has been invented. This laser-based scanner – which can be used 164-feet away — could read everything from a person’s adrenaline levels, to traces of gun powder on a person’s clothes, to illegal substances — and it can all be done without a physical search. It also could be used on multiple people at a time, eliminating random searches at airports.

The scanner is called the Picosecond Programmable Laser. The device works by blasting its target with lasers which vibrate molecules that are then read by the machine that determine what substances a person has been exposed to. This could be Semtex explosives to the bacon and egg sandwich they had for breakfast that morning.

The laser-based scanner is expected to be used in airports as soon as 2013.

BIG SIS IS WATCHING YOU! You “terrorist” you!  YEAH, YOU!🙂

The government has been targeting Spanish speakers with radio “novelas” promoting food stamp usage as part of a stated mission to increase participation in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), or food stamps.

Each novela, comprising a 10-part series called “PARQUE ALEGRIA,” or “HOPE PARK,” presents a semi-dramatic scenario involving characters convincing others to get on food stamps, or explaining how much healthier it is to be on food stamps.

The majority of the episodes end with the announcer encouraging the listener to tune in again to see if the skeptic applies for benefits or learns to understand the importance of food stamps to their health.

“Will Claudia convince Ramon to apply for SNAP?” the announcer exclaims at the end of a standard episode titled “The Poet,” “Don’t miss our next episode of ‘HOPE PARK.’”(DC)

Presently in America, nearly half of all households receive either a salary or substantial benefits from the government. Presently in America, nearly half of all adults pay no federal income taxes. Presently in America, the half that pay no income taxes receive the bulk of their income courtesy of the government, but ultimately from the half that do. This money is extracted involuntarily from the paying half by a permanent bureaucracy that extracts and gives away more each year no matter who is running the government. The recipients of these transfer payments rely upon them for subsistence, so they have a vested financial interest in sending to Washington those who will continue to take your money and give it to them.

It is no wonder that we are now saddled with the micromanagement of health care by the same bureaucratic mindset that mismanages the Post Office and everything else the federal government runs. It should not be surprising to know that presently in America, half of the people actually want the government to take care of their needs. The same was the case under Communist regimes, but here those folks vote.

Hence, we have laws that force us to be charitable to those whom the government designates as worthy of our charity, that limit the amount of salt that restaurants can put into our food, that permit the government to watch us on street corners and subways and in the lobbies of buildings, that let the president fight wars of opportunity, that permit the Federal Reserve to print money with no value and inflate prices and destroy savings, that allow the government to listen to us on our cellphones and use those phones to follow us wherever we go, and, according to CIA Director David Petraeus, that let the government anticipate our movements inside our homes.

And as of the last week in June, the government has a vast new power that was brought to us by the Supreme Court’s latest attack on personal freedom. Congress can now lawfully command any behavior of individuals that it pleases — whether or not the subject of the behavior is a power granted to Congress by the Constitution — and it may punish noncompliance with that command, so long as the punishment is called a tax.

Justice Antonin Scalia’s whimsical query during the Supreme Court oral argument on the health care law about whether Congress could make him eat broccoli suddenly isn’t as funny as it was when he asked it, because the answer is: It can fine him for not eating broccoli, so long as it calls that fine a tax.

Quick: If you call a tail a leg, how many legs does a dog have? Answer: Four, because calling a tail a leg doesn’t make a tail a leg.

We got here because voters and the government we elected, and even the courts the popular branches appointed and confirmed, have lost sight of first principles. When Thomas Jefferson wrote in the Declaration of Independence that our rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are a part of our humanity, and when we fought and won the Revolution under that premise, and when the first Congress enacted that language as the first federal law, this became the irrevocable recognition of the Natural Law as the basis for our personal freedom and limited government. Since our rights come from our humanity, they don’t come from the government.

But you would never know that from looking at the government. In New York City, where I work at Fox News Channel, we are all embroiled in two disputes this summer over the constitutional role of the government in our lives. The mayor, a self-made billionaire who likes donuts and has bodyguards but wants to tell others how to live in private and in public, is trying to ban soda pop in containers larger than 16 ounces and wants the police to be able to stop and frisk anyone on a whim — and all in the name of health and safety. He is actually banning freedom.

Imagine Jefferson being told what to eat or stopped and frisked on a whim. And then imagine the Supreme Court telling him that he must pay a tax if he fails to comport his personal private behavior as Congress — which doesn’t believe in privacy or personal freedom — commands.

Here is how you can tell that these are bad days for freedom:

Does the government need your permission to violate your rights, or do you need the government’s permission to exercise them?

The answer is painfully obvious.

Presently in America, what are we going to do about it? (Judge Andrew Napolitano)

Somehow, I do not feel any safer knowing that random DHS bureaucrats are busy labeling ordinary conservatives and libertarian citizens as part of an “extremist right-wing” group of potential domestic terrorists. Actually, I am now even more “suspicious of centralized federal authority” and “reverent of individual liberty.” (Kyle Bonnell)

Talk about having your cake and eating it, too: President Obama’s various spokesmen are adamant that the individual mandate, which the Supreme Court ruled is constitutional as a tax, is not a tax.

Indeed, this whole episode is just more proof that Obama & Co. will say absolutely anything to get what they want, even if they contradict themselves from day to day.

Or call “individual liberty ” loving people “terrorists”.🙂

Obama campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt said that President Obama disagrees with the Supreme Court’s ruling that the individual mandate in Obamacare is a tax.

Anchor Soledad O’Brien asked LaBolt: “His spokesman…said it’s a penalty. The Supreme Court has said it’s a tax. What does he believe?”

“That it’s a penalty,” LaBolt answered. “You saw our arguments before the Supreme Court…”

“So then he disagrees with the Supreme Court decision that says it’s now a tax?” O’Brien asked.

“That’s right,” said LaBolt. “He said that it’s a penalty. You saw our arguments before the Court.”

Funny enough, I was there when Solicitor General Donald Verrilli made the case for the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act, and sadly for LaBolt, Verrilli’s secondary argument in favor of the mandate was that…it’s a tax:

U.S. Solicitor General Donald Verrilli used the phrase “tax penalty” multiple times to describe the individual mandate’s backstop. He portrayed the fee as a penalty by design, but one that functions as a tax because it’s collected through the tax code.

“General Verrilli, today you are arguing that the penalty is not a tax. Tomorrow you are going to be back and you will be arguing that the penalty is a tax,” said Justice Samuel Alito, in one of the few laugh lines throughout the 90 minutes of argument Monday.

Justice Elena Kagan asked whether refusing to buy insurance would constitute breaking the law, to which Verrilli responded that if people “pay the tax, then they are in compliance with the law.” That caught the attention of Justice Stephen Breyer.

“Why do you keep saying tax?” Breyer interjected, to more laughs.

Indeed, Verrilli was tasked with proving that the mandate was constitutional as a tax — and clearly, succeeded — but the political doublespeak lives on.

Case in point: later this morning, Jay Carney doubled down on LaBolt’s defense, but took it a step further. He flat-out said that POTUS thinks SCOTUS was wrong:

MR. CARNEY: But if I could just add as a matter of policy, it is simply a fallacy to say that this is a broad-based tax. That’s not what the opinion stated that was authored by the Chief Justice. The Affordable Care Act is constitutional under Congress’s taxing authority, but this is clearly a penalty that affects less than 1 percent of the American population.

Look, it’s a penalty. It affects 1 percent, and perhaps less, of the population. It is a — I don’t know about you, but you don’t get to choose whether you pay your income taxes — most people don’t. I certainly don’t. This is not a tax in that sense at all. It is a penalty you pay if you fail to buy health insurance but can afford it.

Less than 1%?? So this whole thing is about less than 1% of the people?? Does this make it a 1%er tax then ? Even 2 years before the term was invented BY THE LEFT.🙂

Fascinating. The Chaos in Doublespeak continues.

Justice Roberts: Under the mandate, if an individual does not maintain health insurance, the only consequence is that he must make an additional payment to the IRS when he pays his taxes. See §5000A(b). That, according to the Government, means the mandate can be regarded as establishing a condition—not owning health insurance—that triggers a tax—the required payment to the IRS. Under that theory, the mandate is not a legal command to buy insurance. Rather, it makes going without insurance just another thing the Government taxes, like buying gasoline or earning income. And if the mandate is in effect just a tax hike on certain taxpayers who do not have health insurance, it may be within Congress’s constitutional power to tax.

Of course, that’s not what Barack Obama thinks, therefore, it can’t be true! Gosh, you guys. Isn’t it just so great having a president who’s so smart, that he doesn’t even need the Supreme Court? (Katie Hicks)

Of course, thinking like that could make you a “terrorist”.🙂

Now that’s how you stimulate Job growth, LAWYERS And New Bureaucrats!🙂

THE UN…How insane are they?

The United Nations is considering a new Internet tax targeting the largest Web content providers, including Google, Facebook, Apple, and Netflix, that could cripple their ability to reach users in developing nations.

The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs Thursday proposed introducing an international tax and other financing mechanisms, including a 1% tax on individuals with holdings over one billion dollars, to raise money for critically underfunded international development programs.

The survey also said a $25 per tonne tax on carbon emissions in developed countries – collected by national authorities but allocated for international causes – could raise an estimated $250 billion a year.

Another $40 billion a year could come from a 0.005 percent transaction tax on the four main currencies, the U.S. dollar, euro, yen and the British pound. A tax of 1 percent on billionaires could also be explored, the survey said.

De-Ploy! De-Ploy!

Obama cautioned supporters that Republicans will “spend more money than we have ever seen in the history of the Republic” on political ads “telling you that the economy is bad, it’s all my fault, and I can’t fix it because government is always the answer, according to me.”

Truth hurts dude. But since when did a Liberal every care about the truth…

“Or because I didn’t make a lot of money in the private sector, or because I’m in over my head, or because I think everybody is doing just fine,” the president said, eliciting laughter from the crowd.

“And that may be their plan to win an election, but it’s sure not a plan to create jobs,” he said. (UPI) (The unemployment rate over 8% for 3 1/2 years is a sterling example of how well he has done, right?)

Well, neither is “Vote for Me! or you’re a racist”, class warfare, division, fear, and envy. Oh, and Mormon-bashing.
But don’t expect anyone on the Left to notice.
Republicans, including presumptive presidential nominee Mitt Romney, “believe that we should go back to the top-down economics of the last decade.”

He’s been President for nearly 4 of those year in this last Decade. But the left’s “decade” ended with the beginning of 2009. So he’s throwing the last few years of Clinton under the bus then.🙂
Vote For me, The other guy’s an asshole! A Rich, White, Mormon wierdo asshole!
And Homeless poor people create jobs.
It’s Tiresome. But we have 4 more months of this.
Oh then there’s this…

Obama Asks People Getting Married To Forgo Gifts, Ask Their Guests To Donate To His Campaign Instead…

You can even register your wedding on his campaign website. Could he be any more pompous?

So, on your wedding day, give everything to him so he can take it again from you in higher taxes and more regulations and fewer jobs. But it’ll make you feel good!

Next thing you know it’s going to be instead of giving your kids candy give it to Obama. (taking candy from a baby…get it?)🙂

When in doubt, give him all your money. Got any loose change in the sofa, give it to Obama!

Documents released June 15 said the amnesty would exclude people who had been formally found guilty of committing a felony or a “significant misdemeanor.”

Administration officials told immigration lawyers in a subsequent telephone conference that a drunk-driving conviction would disqualify applicants, but did not explain what they meant by “significant misdemeanor.”

“Significant misdemeanor” is not a legal term; it has no statutory definition,” said a statement from the Federation for American Immigration Reform. “It is simply a term that has been made up by the administration… [which] could change its mind at any time and make the term more or less inclusive.” (DC)

But if it suckers Hispanics into voting for him then it’s done it’s job. It was and is a ploy anyhow. Obama attacks Romney on it, then he evades explaining what this Orwellian BS means. That’s why its a ploy. It’s not heart felt it’s just a ploy.

“What if an individual committed crimes in another country? Or was booked or convicted under a different name? Or an alien comes forward and applies for deferred action under a different name,” said an immigration activist.

“It’s not as if the alien will be producing a birth certificate from a U.S. hospital. They are illegal; that’s the whole point. They may have used multiple names, aliases, SSNs, etc. They may have used multiple fake documents.”

The administration provided vague details about the documents that would be deemed sufficient to prove an individual met the government’s rules. “Documentation sufficient for an individual to demonstrate that he or she came to the United States before the age of 16 includes, but is not limited to: financial records, medical records, school records, employment records, and military records.”

But after the 1986 amnesty, federal officials accepted many fraudulent documents, boosting the number of immigrants way above the forecasted numbers.

“I would assume, given the mood of the government, and the precedents, that various bits of evidence… would be considered and unless grossly phony would be accepted,” North said.

The likely acceptance of fraud could allow many people older than 31 to get work permits, he said. “I worry, particularly, at the older end of the spectrum, of highly questionable foreign birth certificates dated the last half of 1982 and 1983,” said North.

The American Immigration Lawyers Association declined to respond to TheDC’s request for information. The association’s members stand to gain from the new policy, which creates many new legal clients.

“The overarching point I would make is that this policy for granting deferred action, is … policy and not statutory language,” said one immigration activist. The government “could change the [rules and details] at any time.”

“This is a classic political strategy: set forth what appears to be a solid rule, and then undermine it with tons of exceptions,” said the activist. “Politicians know that neither the media nor the average American will have the time or patience to sort through it all.” (DC)

But it sounds good. It sounds “compassionate” , you’re a “racist” and heartless if you oppose it. And more importantly it gets him votes. The details really don’t matter.
Obama wants to win with the people he has put out of work, illegals, minorities, and the poor who want everyone else to pay for them.
Now that’s the American Dream!
And the Executive Orders he has made in his Presidency show that HE wants to be the final arbiter of what is and what is lawful based on what HE wants.
Now that’s America for you.
Then There’s  Crazy Obsessed Nancy. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said Thursday that House Republicans attempting to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress are part of a “nationwide scheme to suppress the vote.”

“What we have seen is a shameful display of abuse of power by the Republicans in the House of Representatives. Instead of bringing job-creating legislation to the floor, the transportation bill, they are holding the attorney general of the United States in contempt of Congress for doing his job. It’s really important to note how this is connected with some of their other decisions. It is no accident. It is no coincidence that the attorney general of the United States is the person responsible for making sure that voter suppression does not happen in our country, that issues that relate to the civil liberties of the American people are upheld,” Pelosi told reporters at the Capitol during her weekly press briefing.

“These very same people who are holding him in contempt are part of a nationwide scheme to suppress the vote. They are closely allied with those who are suffocating the system with unlimited special-interest secret money, and they are poisoning the debate. They are poisoning the debate with that money.”

So the fact that she was saying earlier in the week that she personally had the power to arrest Karl Rove (which she did not and when the Contempt order came to the floor when she was Speaker and it was ignored is not relevant! The whole Valerie Plaime Farce is also not relevant!) and the fact the Senate hasn’t passed a Budget since April 2009 and the bills that Nancy is decrying were passed by the Republicans in the House but ignored in The Senate doesn’t matter either.
It’s all about them! It’s what THEY WANT that matters.
“Don’t forget: They’re going after Eric Holder because he is supporting measures to overturn these voter suppression initiatives in the states. This is no accident. It is no coincidence. It is a plan on the part of the Republicans.”(DC)
People like Agent Brian Terry Dying are irrelevant. Protecting Illegal Aliens so they can fraudulently vote is. Pandering is far more important because after all, the end justifies the means and the end is winning (Charlie Sheen style).

Speaker Boehner, however, said the American people “deserve the truth” about Operation Fast and Furious.

Just like Obama said of Bush repeatedly. But you aren’t supposed to remember that. The Left lives in only what is good for me at this nanosecond in time.

“Congress also has a responsibility to the American people to learn the truth about what happened in Fast and Furious. On February the 4th, 2011, the Department of Justice denied allegations that it allowed guns to be smuggled into Mexico. Ten months later, the Justice Department formally withdrew its denial and acknowledged that it made false claims to Congress about this reckless operation,” Boehner said Thursday.

“The Obama administration stonewalled Congress’ legitimate oversight responsibilities to find out how and why it made these false claims. Remember, we’re talking about a program that gave Mexican drug dealers guns, and those guns killed an American border agent.”

Boehner called on the Obama administration to turn over the “relevant documents right now.” He claimed that Obama’s “decision to invoke executive privilege is an admission that White House officials were involved in decisions that misled the Congress and have covered up the truth.”

“So what is the Obama administration hiding in Fast and Furious?” he asked.

Juan WILLIAMS (On FBN): What do you think the government shouldn’t have any secret? You can’t have a private conversation in the White House now about politics?Eric BOLLING: We gotta go – NO, not when someone’s dead Juan! Not when three hundred Mexicans…

WILLIAMS: We know how the guy died!

BOLLING: …are dead at the hands of the same guns.

WILLIAMS: Hey people die in war! People died…

BOLLING: Don’t you care about the three hundred Mexicans that died from the guns the guns that were traced back to Fast and Furious?

WILLIAMS: I care about human life. But I’m telling you people die. And you know what? We know the facts of Fast and Furious. We know how he died!

He’s Dead. The rest is irrelevant unless it serve us politically.
Juan Williams: “The hardball political fact is that attacking the court will help the president’s campaign and it will damage the court for years to come…A 5-4 defeat of the healthcare law will erode trust in the justice system.”
“the court may do irreparable harm to its reputation with another highly political split between justices appointed by Democrats and justices appointed by Republicans…It will be another example of how polarization has poisoned our politics during the past decade. Team Obama is right to conclude there is fertile political ground to be plowed in lashing out against the right-wing activism of the Roberts Court.”
So what we need is even more liberal partisans on the court to sort this out!!🙂
And judicial activism BY liberals are to be ignored.
And the appointment of people Like Elena Kagan who worked on ObamaCare and was posted to the Supreme Court specifically to be a Liberal activist is to be ignored.
It’s all a conspiracy by the Right and this isn’t a political ploy by the Left.
Where’s my barf bag…
