Wonder Hate

First off, let me state that the new “Wonder Woman” movie is one of the greatest Comic Book Superhero movies ever made.

And the Left is unhinged because the lead character, a feminist icon for the last 75 years, is played by an Israeli!

These are the same people that say that it you’re a hater if you object to say, The Doctor, from “Doctor Who” being played by a woman.

The orthodoxy must not be upset.

It started when the trailer come out almost a year ago:

Social justice warriors spent years fervently fighting to get more blockbuster films starring women. Comic-Con’s debut of the Wonder Woman trailer, has triggered an uproar of these same liberals, indignant that lead actress, Gal Gadot, is an Israeli woman and proud veteran of the Israeli army.

Conscripted into the Israeli Defense Forces at 20, Gal Gadot served two years, where she excelled in the physically daunting boot camp, and went on to serve as combat trainer. She studied law for a year, but after being discovered by a casting director went on to persue her career in film. Putting her combat training to use, Gadot does all her stunts herself. After finishing her service in the army, Gal married her fiancé, and went on to have a baby girl.

In an interview with People Magazine, Gadot elucidated on the importance of strong female characters in popular culture. Keen on passing her values of independence, courage and hard work to her daughter, Gadot explained, “It is so important for girls and boys to have a female, strong, superhero to look up to.”

Needless to say, she’s a total badass. A strong combat army veteran, a caring mother and rising action star. You would think this ought to be the apex of feminism. But alas, Gal was attacked relentlessly by the social justice acolytes for her Israeli background.

In one example of some of the vitriol hurled at the Israeli Wonder Woman heroine, which has since been removed, a Twitterer accused her of “boast[ing] about killing Palestinians.”

“Can’t really bring myself to like the Wonder Woman trailer since Gal Gadot is an outspoken Zionist who boasted about killing Palestinians,” he wrote.

Boasted about killing Palestinians? That’s flagrantly false. It likely refers to a Facebook post made by the actress, in which she decried the barbaric practices of Hamas. She wrote, “I am sending my love and prayers to my fellow Israeli citizens. Especially to all the boys and girls who are risking their lives protecting my country against the horrific acts conducted by Hamas, who are hiding like cowards behind women and children…We shall overcome!!! Shabbat Shalom! #weareright #freegazafromhamas #stopterror #coexistance #loveidf.”

Some more left-wing reaction:

Also: Comic book character Wonder Woman was appointed a UN honorary ambassador for the empowerment of women and girls in October 2016. Two months later, she was stripped of the role after much backlash. More than 16 000 people signed a petition calling for her removal, stating, “It is alarming that the United Nations would consider using a character with an overtly sexualised image at a time when headline news is the objectification of women and girls,” and calling the choice “not culturally encompassing or sensitive”.
And it has continued with the release:
Twitter Valli: I genuinely don’t understand how you could ignore the fact that Gal Gadot is a Zionist & literally supports genocide bc you liked her acting

So if that’s the case, is it really okay to be having Wonder Woman be someone complicit in a system of oppression, fully supportive of a regime that is wholly suppressive of the human rights of an entire nation?

Somehow, rejecting Palestinian rights to self-determination doesn’t seem to quite be in line with upholding justice and equality…What kind of subconscious messages are we sending out about justice and empowerment if we aren’t critically thinking about what goes into representing a certain character?

Because as it stands, what I’m getting is this: the current Wonder Woman can do it all – target innocent civilians, and wear lipstick at the same time.Daily Vox

Lebanon has banned distribution of the new film Wonder Woman because the titular actress, Gal Gadot, is an Israeli and served in the IDF. Lebanon has a ban on the purchase of Israeli products, and Lebanese citizens are not allowed to travel to Israel. Wonder Woman is not an Israeli film and was produced by Warner Bros.

Who would have thought that a story that involves both comic book culture and Middle Eastern politics would prompt such furor?
But the binary optics are all aligned.
“To me, whatever chance Wonder Woman had of being some kind of feminist antidote to the overabundance of superhero movies made by and for bros was blown by its prevailing occupation with the titular heroine’s sex appeal.” — The Slate.
So she has to be Ugly to be a feminist icon? 😦 Despite the fact that Amazons in mythology for thousands of years have been beautiful.  Lynda Carter was beautiful in the 1970’s (and still is today BTW) so I’m confused.
“I’m both frightened and aroused,” goes one character’s response to Diana’s ass-kicking moves, prompting one of the audience’s loudest, longest laughs at the screening I attended.(The Slate)
It’s one of the funniest scenes in the whole movie, but you’re “offended”? Gee, does Kim Kardasian offend you? Or Jennifer Lopez, or any other “beautiful” star??
During a year in which a virulent misogynist became president, “Wonder Woman” has broken box office records for films helmed by a female director.  (Salon.com)
So you hate it because a) she’s Jewish b) she’s Israeli  c) it’s anti-Palestinian d) She beautiful  so far.  e) For Salon it’s Trump’s fault. 🙂
IT”S A FRICKKIN’ MOVIE FOR GOD’S SAKE PEOPLE!
It’s not Shakespeare!
I swear some day soon what side of your toast you butter is going to be a big frickin’ deal.
