Congratulations Tom DiLorenzo on your new book, The Problem with Socialism!  As the DNC Convention kicks off this week, what a fantastic time to remind people why there are some problems with socialism.  Give us an overview of your book.

The target audience is the millennial generation (and their parents), so many of whom have expressed support for socialism, of all things, with hundreds of thousands of them becoming Bernie Sanders supporters.  This is a shocking development, a quarter of a century after the spectacular worldwide collapse of socialism.  It is the consequence of several decades of extreme political correctness in our educational system where conservatives who might have educated our young people about the reality of socialism have been so effectively censored.

So I’ve written what I believe is a straightforward, easy-to-understand book with sixteen short chapters that explain why “millennials” should not want socialism in their future.  Some of the topics include why socialism makes inequality in society worse; the evils of the bureaucratization of society; the brutal death toll of socialism in the twentieth century; the myth of “successful” Scandinavian socialism; how fascism was a form of socialism; why socialism is far worse for the environment than capitalism; how welfare harms the poor; the destructiveness of the “progressive” income tax; and the second plank of the ten planks in The Communist Manifesto.

So what is the “problem” with socialism?

Where to begin?!  A big problem is that a Pew Foundation poll recently found that 69% of voters under the age of 30 said that they would vote for a socialist for president.

The main problems with socialism is that it will destroy your economic future – and your children’s future; it creates an unjust society where a small political elite enriches itself by imposing a regime of equality of poverty and misery on most everyone else; it has been associated with the worst crimes in human history, as documented in The Black Book of Communism, among other places

The socialist welfare state also harms the poor by destroying their work incentives, crowding out private charities, and causing family break-ups where fathers are replaced by government checks; and it destroys personal freedoms by using governmental force in pursuit of “equality.”  That’s just for starters.

You discuss in your book that politicians, like Bernie Sanders, use Scandinavian socialist political systems as the standard-bearer for ideal socialist societies.  Why is Bernie Sanders wrong?

One of the chapters of my book is entitled “The Myth of ‘Successful Scandinavian Socialism and addresses this question.  The reality is very different from the rhetoric of Bernie Sanders and his political clone Hillary Clinton.

Sweden, for example, was one of the wealthiest countries in the world in the late 19th and early 20th centuries thanks to its large degree of economic freedom and a culture of entrepreneurship and capitalism.  It produced many great inventors and entrepreneurs such as Alfred Nobel, the inventor of dynamite, the people who created Volvo and Saab automobiles, and much more.  Sweden enjoyed the highest per-capita income growth in the world from 1870 to 1950.

But Swedish politicians began experimenting with fascism in the 1930s and then socialism, with the nationalization of many industries, a large welfare state, super-progressive income taxation, and onerous regulation and regimentation of private industry.  Sweden began “eating up” its accumulated capital, created by previous generations of capitalists, so much so that according to the Swedish Economic Association, Sweden did not create a single net new job from 1950 to 2005.

Because of this economic destruction the government resorted to printing massive amounts of money in an attempt to bail itself out, resulting in 500% interest rates. That in turn led to a Thatcher-like revolt that reduced marginal tax rates, privatized many industries, deregulated bank lending, retail, telecommunications, and airlines, and imposed deep spending cuts.  But fifty years of Swedish socialism is hard to recover from: the Swedes still have a per-capita income level that is lower than in Mississippi, our lowest-income state.

So the reality is the opposite of the story told by Bernie Sanders.  It is very telling that when he was recently interviewed by a Latin American journalist from Univision and asked about the economic implosion in “democratic socialist” Venezuela and Argentina he had nothing to say – for the first time in his adult life!

Are you concerned that nine out of ten Millennials who identify as Democrats overwhelmingly supported Bernie Sanders over Hillary Clinton throughout the Democratic presidential primary?  What can conservatives do to help educate them?

I consider Hillary Clinton to be just as much a socialist a Bernie Sanders is.  The only difference is that she doesn’t use the “S” word.  When Chris Mathews asked her recently what the difference was between a Democrat and a socialist she refused to answer the question.  This leads many to believe that she must think there is no difference.  She and Bernie are ideological soul mates.  After all, she is the author of the failed “Hillarycare,” an attempt to impose Soviet-style central planning on the entire health care sector.

I’m convinced that the vast majority of the millennials who say they support socialism have no idea what it is, and are simply seduced by political demagogues who offer them free stuff.  But when I point out to my students that I do not work for free, and neither does my doctor, so that education and healthcare could not possibly be “free,” they react a bit shocked since no one has ever pointed out to them before that there is no such thing as a free lunch, as the saying goes.

Some of them become resentful or angry that politicians like Sanders tried to make fools of them.  This makes me optimistic that if I put in the hands of conservative college students a book like this, they can use the intellectual ammunition in the book to persuade their classmates that freedom and not socialism should be the wave of their future.  It’s not hard to sell young people on freedom.

What books, authors, or conservative-themed book influenced your political philosophy and outlook on life?

I was an economics major in college and my first major influence was Milton Friedman.  I was very impressed by a book of his collected Newsweek columns from the 1970s entitled “An Economist’s Protest.”  I loved his clear writing and logical thought, and decided that I wanted to be able do what he was doing.

I also discovered The Freeman, the magazine published by the Foundation for Economic Education, and that introduced me to many of the best-known conservative economic and political writers of the time.  I became interested in the ideas of Ludwig von MisesF.A. Hayek, James Buchanan and Gordon Tullock of the “public choice school.”  They were both graduate school professors of mine.  Anyone with this kind of educational background is bound to be a conservative or a libertarian.

I was also influence by “Old Right” writers such as Frank Meyer, Frank Chodorov, John T. Flynn, and H.L. Mencken.  I’ve also been a student of the Jeffersonian tradition of the American founding, reading the writings of Jefferson himself and his intellectual heirs such as John C. Calhoun whose 1850 book, A Disquisition on Government, is one of my favorites.

The DNC Menagerie


As part of the 50th Anniversary of “Star Trek” Hillary and the Democrats are going to remake the original Pilot episode.

Part of the original Star Trek series, The Menagerie tells the story of a Star Fleet captain whom a cunning alien race tricks into living with a hideous woman by creating an illusionary reality, in which they are both healthy, beautiful, and romantic.

The 2016 remake of this story by DNC Studios premiered at the Democratic Convention last night, with an updated plot, in which the same illusion expands to the entire audience: the viewers see the hideous woman, played by Hillary Clinton, as healthy, beautiful, and romantic, while her partner, played by Bill Clinton, has always seen her for what she really is but continues to play along out of habit and for the sake of convenience.

The Menagerie makes for a very good take on socialism itself. Spend the rest of your life in a zoo cage where all of your biological needs are taken care of – forgo living the life of a fully realized Man. Trade having a life for simply being alive in the animal sense. No self governance needed or allowed. Just life as an animal in the cage.

It is the temptation written about in ancient epics – give up your life Aeneid and you can stay here on my island with me for eternity… or you can go your way and live free like a Man but only be mortal.

And if you don’t bite into Eden’s Apple you’re a racist and a bigot!

Now you don’t want that Scarlet Letter on you do you?


To Not Serve & Disrespect

More for the “tolerance” and “diversity” crowd…

From Recently there has been a rash of people who are fed up with the police state whom have begun using the only position of power they have, in their own workplace, to send a message to cops. While media and political pundits tout the myth of a War on Cops, there is a real battle taking place that is not violent, but the result of a new ideological momentum that thwarts the shackles of authoritarianism. The serfs, as it were, are rising up and refusing to participate. The refusal of service to LEO’s might be one of the most powerful trends yet to surface in the fight against the police state.

So it is of little surprise that those who have been forced into soulless service industry jobs by oligarchal economic paradigms for very little reward are starting to fight back.

Police represent not just a poor return on their forced investment, but are also the whip-bearers working on behalf of the economic powers that have created this endless cycle of consumption for profit. When the working poor pour out into the streets to fight the forces of their oppression, who will be there with rubber bullets, tear gas and paddy wagons…or worse? The police are not just more harsh on you the poorer that you are They are the thin blue line that protects the ruling class by keeping you in your place. Police are the Uncle Toms on the plantation of the modern working poor. They are the sellouts who serve to create a barrier between the few who have us all enslaved on some level.

MRC and Others: There seems to be a pattern these days. Just Google “police denied service at restaurant” and you’ll get hundreds of thousands of results. On July 14, an officer was denied service at Lucky Teriyaki in Sedro-Woolley, Wash. On July 16, an officer was denied service at a Taco Bell in Phenix City, Ala. On July 19, an officer was denied service at Genghis Grill in Dallas.

A Miramar police officer says he was refused service at a Sunoco service station and convenience store.

Sheriff Reichardt said four Skagit County deputies were finishing up lunch at Lucky’s Teriyaki and as two of them went to pay, the owner came out and asked that they not eat there any more. The deputies said the owner told them the customers didn’t like law enforcement there.

Not believing what he was hearing, Sheriff Reichardt asked his Chief Deputy to go speak to the owner and confirm the story. Sheriff Reichardt said not only did the owner repeat the request, but asked that the Sheriff’s Office spread the word to other law enforcement officers that they were also no long welcome.

Most recently, on Monday, a police officer was denied service in Alexandria, Va., when the chef refused to cook for the uniformed woman.

An Alabama police officer says workers at a fast food restaurant refused to serve him when he went through the drive-thru in his police cruiser. It happened at a Krystal restaurant in Irondale.

The police chief says the officer waited in at the drive-thru window for ten minutes. When no one helped him, the officer went inside to order. But the police chief says the workers who were inside walked away.

The good news is that in each case the owners apologized and pledged their support for the police while the offending employees were fired. But unfortunately, hatred of the police is affecting every aspect of their daily lives.

A Northern Virginia police officer was denied service at a Noodles & Co. in the latest episode of anti-cop animosity at restaurants across the country.

A woman working as a cook Monday night at an Alexandria location told the cashier loud enough for the officer to hear, “You better pull me off the line, because I’m not serving that,” officials with the Alexandria Police Department told WTTG-TV.

The cook motioned at the officer, and she and the cashier started to laugh. The officer, a woman wearing her uniform while standing in line behind a family, simply told them “I guess you don’t want my money,” and left.

She reported the encounter to her supervisor. Noodles & Co. executives announced Wednesday that they had fired two workers over the incident, and APD Chief Earl Cook paid a visit to the Duke St. location of the fast casual noodle chain.

“These are very difficult times right now in our relations with everyone,” Cook told the TV station. “And to have one of my officers treated in that manner unnecessarily, your first response is anger.”

Representatives for the company said in a statement that they “concluded the two team members in question acted inappropriately and we immediately terminated their employment.” Noodles & Co. executives also apologized “for the inexcusable actions of these individuals” to the officer who tried to eat at the restaurant Monday night, they said.

“Further, we want to extend our apologies to the entire Alexandria Police Department for the comments made by our team member,” Noodles & Co. executives said. “We have the utmost respect for law enforcement officials and value the relationship we have built with the local Alexandria Police Department over the years.”

The encounter followed a series of incidents shortly after the Dallas police ambush involving police officers who felt restaurant customers and staff treated them less than respectfully.

Wash. restaurant owner blames language barrier after banning cops

A Columbus, Ohio officer was hospitalized last week after biting into a sandwich laced with glass at a cafe, though investigators don’t believe the glass was placed there on purpose. Earlier this month, staff at a North Carolina Zaxby’s fried chicken heckled two Cleveland County sheriff’s deputies and covered their food with extra spicy hot sauce.

Alexandria Police Chief Earl Cook visited the business the day after the incident. The department plans to hold a meeting with employees at the eatery.

A man at a diner outside Pittsburgh refused to sit next to a group of four police officers eating at the restaurant. One of the officers later paid for the man’s dinner because the officer said he wanted to show the man that “we’re not here to hurt you.”

Back in Virginia, Noodles & Co. managers have agreed to post “Blue Lives Matter” stickers on the front of the business to show support for local officers. APD officials plan to hold a meeting with employees at the eatery, and they posted on Twitter after a user mentioned a possible boycott.

“Please, APD does not support any crime related to this unfortunate incident, or even a boycott,” APD officials said. “Take the high road!”

A McDonald’s worker in Texas was fired Wednesday after refusing to provide service to a police officer, CBS Houston affiliate KHOU-TV reports.

The owners of the McDonald’s franchise in Brenham said the actions of their employee were completely unacceptable, and police said it was the right thing to do.

“Nobody deserves to be treated like that,” Brenham Police Chief Craig Goodman told the station.

Similar incidents have been reported at a Taco Bell in Alabama, a Whataburger in Texas and an Arby’s in Florida.

For an off-duty Brenham police officer, a trip to get a burger and fries with his two children made him a target.

“She said, ‘I’m not going to serve law enforcement,’ and turned away and walked away from him,” said Goodman. “She refused to provide service.”

“The same lady that refused the officer, if somebody breaks into her house, who’s she going to call?” a man asked. “She’s going to call the police department.”

Will they show her the same “courtesy” and refuse service?  🙂

Organizers of the Black DNC Resistance March in Philadelphia were seen Wednesday on video segregating their protest by ordering white people to the back of the line.

“I need all white people to move to the back – make space because this is a Black Resistance March,” one of the leaders yelled from the bed of a pickup truck. “I need all white people to move to the back and make room for the black and brown brothers and sisters.”

Local media reports the march was organized by a coalition of neighborhood groups including Black Lives Matter Philadelphia.

A Fox News colleague who was reporting on the march said as much as half of the crowd was white.

“What if white people were in Ferguson,” one older white activist could be heard asking.

The latest headlines on the 2016 elections from the biggest name in politics.

The unidentified woman with the megaphone repeatedly told all Caucasian protesters to move.

“You will appropriately take your place in the back of this march because it will be truly led by the black and brown community and that’s it,” she roared.

The edict even applied to journalists covering the demonstration.

“Make room for black media,” she yelled. “White media get to the back. Black media come to the front.”

We apparently live in a nation where one’s place in a protest march is determined by the color of their skin and not the content of their character.

Later that evening, other demonstrators caused mayhem outside the DNC convention hall. Protestors dragged the Israeli flag through the streets – some of the flags were burned.

They even desecrated the Star-Spangled Banner.

Anti-American protesters threw Old Glory on the ground. They stomped on the flag and then set it ablaze.

I can’t even begin to imagine the anti-American hatred they harbor in their hearts. I can’t begin to comprehend their contempt for those who fought and died for the stars and stripes.

How incredibly sad it was to witness such hatred and racism on full display in the City of Brotherly Love.

One protester objecting to the racial segregation raised the Rosa Parks incident, but the angry woman did not respond. 

Before the march set off, the woman told white people: ‘Take your rightful position, behind us.’

Standing in front of a black and red anarchist flag, she said: ‘I want to see all of the white folks at the back of the crowd.’

At the same time the woman was making the highly offensive comments, the mothers of several black men shot dead were addressing the convention.  

Trayvon Martin’s mother Sybrina Fulton told Democrats that she supports Hillary Clinton because the presidential nominee ‘is a mother who can assure our movement will succeed’.  (Daily Mail)

This passage from Norris’ op-ed lays out the disastrous consequences of the GOP not uniting in this election:

Norris was not always a Trump supporter — early in the election and going as far back as the 2008 election, he supported Gov. Mike Huckabee.

“After Mike dropped out, I decided to wait until the people chose the candidate they wanted as their next president. Then, I would wholeheartedly support that candidate, which is now Donald Trump,” Norris wrote.

Norris explains what would likely happen if Republican don’t rally around Trump:

“If reluctant Republicans and other freedom-loving citizens don’t rally now behind GOP nominee Donald Trump, we could elect Hillary by default, or by those who merely stay at home on Election Day.”

For anyone that is concerned about Trump, consider Norris’ words here:

Norris ends with a call to everyone to unite behind Trump:

“I would like to encourage every Republican – whether establishment, moderate, liberal or conservative – to come together and unite for the good of our country. Actually, I would like to see independents and Reagan Democrats join us as well to help “Make America Great Again.”

20,000 freshly leaked emails reveal resentful disdain toward Sanders, as party favored Clinton long before any votes were cast


In its recent leak of 20,000 DNC emails from January 2015 to May 2016, DNC staff discuss how to deal with Bernie Sanders’ popularity as a challenge to Clinton’s candidacy. Instead of treating Sanders as a viable candidate for the Democratic ticket, the DNC worked against him and his campaign to ensure Clinton received the nomination.

One email from DNC Deputy Communications Director Eric Walker to several DNC staffers cites two news articles showing Sanders leading in Rhode Island and the limited number of polling locations in the state: “If she outperforms this polling, the Bernie camp will go nuts and allege misconduct. They’ll probably complain regardless, actually.”

Instead of treating Sanders with impartiality, the DNC exhibits resentful disdain toward him and the thousands of disenfranchised voters he could have brought into the party.

“Wondering if there’s a good Bernie narrative for a story, which is that Bernie never ever had his act together, that his campaign was a mess,” wrote DNC Deputy Communications Director Mark Paustenbach to DNC Communications Director Luis Miranda, in response to backlash over DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz shutting off the Sanders campaign’s access to voter database files.

Most of the emails released come from seven prominent DNC staff members: senior adviser Andrew Wright, national finance director Jordon Kaplan, finance chief of staff Scott Comer, Northern California finance director Robert Stowe, finance director of data and strategic initiatives Daniel Parrish, finance director Allen Zachary and Miranda.

The release provides further evidence the DNC broke its own charter violations by favoring Clinton as the Democratic presidential nominee, long before any votes were cast.

Over the past several weeks, Guccifer 2.0 released several internal memos showing DNC staff strategizing to make Clinton the presidential nominee—as early as March 2015. In June 2016, Florida-based law firm, Beck & Lee, filed a class action lawsuit against Wasserman Schultz and the DNC based on the revelations from these leaked files.

Other emails show DNC staff in damage control over allegations from the Sanders campaign, when a report—corroborated by a Politico—revealed the DNC’s joint fundraising committee with the Clinton campaign was laundering money to the Clinton campaign instead of fundraising for down-ticket Democrats. Regardless of the fundraising tactics, because both major campaigns didn’t agree to use the joint fundraising committee super-PAC with the DNC, the DNC should have recused itself from participating with just the Clinton campaign.

The Wikileaks and Guccifer 2.0 leaks are the perfect end to a Democratic primary that undermined democracy at every possible opportunity while maintaining plausible deniability.

The party’s rules, including the use of super delegates—who disproportionately endorsed Clinton before the primaries began—are intended to provide the Democratic Party leverage over the election process. Throughout the primaries, decisions were made by DNC officials to help Clinton build and maintain a lead over Sanders.

More votes were cast for Clinton, but they were cast at the behest of a Democratic Party that downplayed her shortfalls to the extent that Sanders not only had to run against Clinton but also against the entire Democratic Establishment. Heading into the Democratic National Convention, voters are beginning to understand that their voices are of little concern to the leadership. (Observer)

Naturally, The DNC doesn’t take responsibility for it, even though Debbie Does Hillary resigned as a sacrificial fake out.

Hillary Clinton’s campaign has accused Russia of meddling in the 2016 presidential election, saying its hackers stole Democratic National Committee (DNC) emails and released them to foment disunity in the party and aid Donald Trump. (From Hillary’s Private Server maybe? 🙂 )

Clinton’s campaign manager, Robby Mook, said on Sunday that “experts are telling us that Russian state actors broke into the DNC, stole these emails, [and are] releasing these emails for the purpose of helping Donald Trump”.

“I don’t think it’s coincidental that these emails are being released on the eve of our convention here,” he told CNN’s State of the Union, alluding to the party’s four-day exercise in unification which is set to take place this week in Philadelphia.

“This isn’t my assertion,” Mook said. “This is what experts are telling us.”

In a statement, the Clinton campaign repeated the accusation: “This is further evidence the Russian government is trying to influence the outcome of the election.” (UK Guardian)

That these United States are, and of Right ought to be Enslaved and Dependent States; that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the Constitution, and that all political connection between them and the United States of America, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as Enslaved and Dependent States, they have full Power to levy Privilege, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Socialism, and to do all other Acts and Things which
